Looking to take a friend out for brunch - there will be 8 of us. We have done The Jefferson, The Boathouse, Black Sheep, Millie's and Can-Can. We are looking for somewhere other than these places, with good food! Any recommendations are welcome - thanks!

Lulu's has a really nice brunch menu, don't they?

Mimi's, but go early because they start lining up! But you can wait with a great bloody Mary or mimosa.

Cafe Gutenberg (in shockoe bottom) is wonderful. They use lots of fresh local ingredients. We particularly enjoy the corncakes with either smoked salmon or sausage as well as the pecan spice waffle. Here is their website. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I haven't been there in almost a year, and I understand they have changed the menu since....

i'm stuck in the west end where there are no good options. but... the capital ale house has some decent options. i don't love anything about their other food (well their burgers and fries are ok but that's it) but i have had some nice brunches outside around the lake there. you've already named the other nice places i've found.

Cafe Rustica--really superb food. I ate brunch there a couple of weeks ago, and as usual the dishes are really interesting and inventive, beautifully prepared, really nice service and great prices. Can Can also has a good brunch, my fav until Cafe Rustica started theirs.

We were very pleased with brunch at Lulu's. Our gluten free friend loved that the poached egg dishes did not come over english muffins, except where specified. I loved the poached eggs over crabcakes, the crab enchilada was delicious, and the bellinis were a perfect brunch drink.

I'd recommend it, and I think we're trying dinner there this week. Thanks for all of the recommendations, we are thinking about trying Cafe Rustica next!!

I love Cafe Rustica. I have a hard time getting my husband there but it's one of my favorites.

It's weird because he enjoyed the meal he had there, but if he's driving downtown he thinks he has to go to Edo's, Millie's or Sensi :-) I'd love to do dinner sometime!

8 is a hard number for the local and smaller restaurants. Berkley Hotel is a hidden secret for brunch and many forget about Tobacco Company ( I have been surprised, believe me I know....) There is Wheezies Kitchen in Carytown that has a good breakfast on regular weekdays that might be worth a look as well. I tend to stick to Joes' Inn and Perly's for breakfast Mon-Sat, so they might be viable options. A "secret" breakfast spot that serves great quality food is Cafe 805 on Cary Street near Belvidere smack dab in the middle of VCU. You have to find it but you will be surprised by how good the food is, even if 8 might be a long shot for such a small place.
