Fresh yeast in Halifax?

Hi, I'm still looking for fresh yeast for home baking in Halifax -- this is compressed or cake yeast that keeps for about 2 weeks when refrigerated, and is sold in cubes or blocks. It's not active dry yeast. Does anyone know where I can find this in or around Halifax? I've tried nearly all the stores and supermarkets without any luck. Thanks!

I've seen the blocks of fresh yeast at the Bulk Barn in Bayer's Lake.

I don't know about commercial fresh yeast, but if you're up for an adventure it's easy enough to grow your own wild yeast. It's how all good sourdough gets it's start. There are instructions at http://www.io.com/~sjohn/sour.htm . I can also tell you from personal experience that you can make an ok yeast culture around here as it grows fine in my Nova Scotian home.

Did you ever find it? I've been searching for a few months now, too, and am about to give up.

I've looked, but never found it at Pete's.

Here's a discussion on using dry yeast instead: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/341562

Thanks all. I never found it, and gave up a long time ago. I've just been using dry yeast for everything, which is OK, but I do miss the fresh yeast...

Have you tried Planet Organic? I don't know for sure, but it seems like a possilbility.
