buying saffron in barcelona

lilaki Aug 20, 2009 01:00 PM

hi chowhounds,

hubby and i will be in barcelona for four nights in september.

we'd like to buy some saffron. can you please advise if this is something that is readily available? or do we have to go hunting for saffron?

we plan to visit la boqueria at least once (if not more times) ... can we buy saffron there?

also, how is it sold? i.e. how is it packaged? and how much does it cost?

Near the middle of La Boquieria was a stall that sold saffron by the gram. They had about a dozen different varieties when we were there two weeks ago. Right in the middle of the stall were glass containers that held the saffron and the owner spoke good English and explained the difference between each variety.

FYI - as I understand it, the saffron this year is both more expensive and not as great as it has been in years past.

      hi seal,

thanks so much for the info.

approximately how much does one pay for a gram of saffron?

We paid 3 euro a gram for what we bought, but I don't remember any more than that. There was quite a selection at differing prices.

we were just there as well and the previous poster was right on, in the middle of the boqueria there is a place, they had 3 different types/brands? varying in price. My wife was looking at them so I am sketchy on the prices, but there is a place to buy it there.
