Looking for hot, trendy restaurant with great food

I've been away from NYC for too many years and don't know what the cool, new restaurants are in town anymore. I used to love Balthazar, Gotham Bar & Grill, Mesa, etc.but wanted to check out a new scene. My preference would be downtown somewhere (East or West Village, Meatpacking, Soho, Gramercy) and I love all sorts of fusion, sushi, Italian, French, mexican, etc. Any recommendations? For service with a glare...but pretty good food...check out The Standard Grill.

Definitely check out Standard Grill. Macao Trading Company is a fun spot also. Locanda Verde, Aldea, Hotel Griffou.

Had a great time at Macao also. Aldea had AMAZING food, but not too trendy. Bond Street is still good and see if you can get into Scarpetta.
