Saturday walk-in anniversary dinner

My husband and I have planned a last minute fifth anniversary trip to NY for the night. We don't want our day to be constrained by reservations, but still want a good meal. Not necessarily fancy, but something exciting and a good culinary experience. We like great food in a not too stuffy or pretentious atmosphere. We are happy to sit at the bar at a place we otherwise wouldn't get a reservation at this late date.
We're staying at 53nd and Madison, but are up for traveling (more likely to go downtown than up).
Thanks for your suggestions!

We ended up having a wonderful anniversary day! We had drinks and a few small plates at The Bar Room near our hotel, saw a show at City Center and then sped downtown to an amazing meal at Lupa. We sat at the bar and had a great experience. The lamb's ear, peach and herbed ricotta salad was perhaps the best salad I've ever had. The sweet and salty, with a hit of pepper at the finish was amazing, as were the sardines with cracked wheat and a terrific oriccheta pasta with chicken. The finishing touch of sweet and salty biscottii and vin sano made the night. We can't wait to go back again!

What time did you get into Lupa? I used to have good luck just showing up there, but the last few times, I struck out.

The Bar Room at The Modern is close by, on 54th, b/t 5th & 6th. Board regular steakrules85 just went there yesterday and posted an excellent detailed review here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/645793 .

One of our favorites is Allegretti, on 22nd St., b/t 5th & 6th Avs. Delicious Provençal cuisine, excellent service, attractive decor, and pleasant ambiance. Table seating and bar dining.

Both restaurants take reservations, but you can also do a walk-in.

        Happy Anniversary and Bon Appetit!

RGR, I believe the bar room doesn't take reservation, whereas the main dining room of The Modern does.

RGR, you are right. I got it mixed up with the bar of Gramercy Tavern...^__^"

No sweat, kobe, though you did have me rethinking for a minute because we've only eaten in The Modern's dining room. Then, I recalled seeing the Bar Room listed on OpenTable.... You are definitely right that the Tavern Room at Gramercy does not take reservations.
