Foods you can't keep in the house because you can't stop yourself eating them
I cannot have cheese in the house unless I'm planning to cook with it - and even then it is likely I'll scoff it before using it for the recipe for which it is intended.
Almonds get nuked and munched at midnight.
Peanut butter seems to evaporate.
What foods do you avoid buying because you know you won't be able to resist their lure when the munchies strike?
-
I have an odd love of most things with vinegar especially if they are then pickled/fermented. I love pickles but I can't ever resist kimchi. I actually do keep it in the house and just lie to myself that it's a vegetable so I can eat it in insane quantities. I am not Asian but a good Korean friend jokes "you eat so much kimchi, you're basically Korean." Snack, side dish, any meal can involve a side of kimchi.

Timtams are my weakness, the original flavour, pleasethankyou. Whenever I have the guts to buy a box I eat it in one sitting. They are addicting.
Crunchy Cheetos, as it has been said before, are the perfect snack crack. "Oh yeah, I'll eat a couple..." BAM the bag is empty. dangerous stuff, dare I say.
Yogurt. Yes, I said yogurt. Seems healthy, yes ? But let's talk like adults, here. I'm implying the good stuff, either Liberté's Méditerranée 10% fat plain yogurt or Olympic's Krema 11% fat, plain again. I mean, it's like eating spoonfuls of whipped cream cheese. It's so sooo good. I have to keep myself from eating the whole tub at once.

Nuts or chocolate--besides those ancient nuts in the shell I never got around to cracking (too lazy) and the baking chocolate... Hell, even the baking chocolate isn't safe in my pantry. Who am I kidding?

Lol at scoffing the cheese before cooking! :)
For me, there are two things - "Hand" or "Thumbs-up" brand peanuts from Malaysia (I love these so much I've had a whole bag and not eaten a proper meal!).
The second is Nutella hazelnut spread (I eat it with a spoon straight out of the jar AND finish half a 500g jar without thinking! Sinful or dangerous?!). I definitely can't have this in the house!

There's a string cheese that's wound into a tight figure 8 that I used to get at Trader Joe's but most recently found at a middle eastern market. I simply cannot stop eating it until it's gone.I cut it in different formations and eat the resulting strands one by one and then go do it over again. It's do embarrassingly good.

Pedestrian, but I can no longer buy Stacey's Simply Naked Pita Chips--BUT only the version at CostCo. They're much thicker and crunchier than the grocery store ones, and I can eat them into oblivion.
And macadamias. I no longer buy the large can at CostCo for my non-traditional (read: no weird candied fruit, but rather coconut, macadamia stuffed dates, etc) fruitcake. I buy only what I need (well, maybe an extra cup) in bulk from Sprouts.

Dolcelatte (a sweet soft blue cheese) will get eaten in once sitting (I can seriously eat 1/2 lb with water crackers without blinking.)
Kettle chips with homemade curry dip also get snarfed down.
Old Forest salami gets eaten by all of us. Sometimes, we just slice up some mild cheese and eat it as an impromptu meal.
Gramercy Tavern Bar Nuts- If I make these, we are in trouble. We usually each gain a lb every time I make these, so I reserve them for the holiday season.
Oh, and red wine. I can slurp down a bottle over an evening and not blink or get drunk.

re: pine time
These will make even a strong person look like a weak one.
Ingredients
4 tablespoons dark brown sugar
½ tablespoon kosher salt
1 ¾ teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (these are spicy...use less if you prefer)
¾ teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons water
1 ½ teaspoons light corn syrup
3½ cups roasted, unsalted nuts (any combination of cashews, pecans, and almonds)Directions
1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Mix all ingredients except for nuts in a medium bowl. Add nuts and toss with spice mixture until evenly coated. Bake for 35 - 40 minutes, stirring once halfway. When nuts are done, the cashews will be a shade more golden than they started. Stir nuts with spatula, then carefully slide or lift parchment and nuts off hot baking sheet onto counter top and let cool completely. Break up nuts with your hands. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for up to one week.

i have a lot of things that i COULD eat forever but am able to control, but there are some things that i just go off the deep end on:
-Natures Valley Granola thins (I ate two whole boxes without even realizing it the other day...)
-Ice cream. all kinds. sometimes i dont even use utensils and just eat the really creamy ones with my fingers (i live alone dont worry). its a real problem.
-Thin Mints

Lately for me it's pistachios. I always have them around, but the have that big "wonderful pistachios" commercial campaign going on. So if I wasn't thinking about eating them, I see the commercial and I wander to the kitchen to get them. It's bad enough that my husband saw my pile of shells in the bin and was like "dear lord, woman--did you eat anything else today besides pistacios?".

1. Ice cream. Usually Haagen-Dazs to avoid the carageenan and guar gum, but B&J's Boston Cream Pie definitely got me on the hook during the summer of 2010. This year it's the far less addictive Edy's Frozen Fruit Bars, esp. Tangerine. And I buy them far less frequently than I would ice cream.
2. Anything I bake. Usually cake, but this summer, it's been fruit cobblers, esp. the easiest one, blueberry. Note to self: don't bake.
3. Corn chips should never, ever, under any circumstances, come in the house, but I've been breaking in a molcajete, so...

I should mention that I also break them open and scoop the flesh out...mmm sooo good! -

I don't buy peanut butter--just do not buy. And dogs love peanut butter, so as soon as I remind myself of my family dog noshing on pb--usually it smells, then I get disgusted and do not have trouble avoiding it.

Kettle Chips, Dirty Potato Chips, roasted salted cashews, peanut butter, bacon, avocado, roquefort, sharp aged cheddar, jelly donuts, high fat granola, leftover pasta of any kind (fried in a pan the next day is killer), leftover fried chicken cutlets, salami, cream cheese. I can't say that I never have these things in the house- on the contrary, I almost always have some of them. The problem is that I eat several servings of them at a time, or, if it's a one-time leftover food, such as fried spaghetti or chicken cutlets, I'll have it on the brain overnight until I finally conquer it!

Jake's Bakehouse Whole Wheat Bread (When combined with the above, very dangerous)Weirdest one for sure is shredded chicken. If I shred chicken to freeze for lunches and don't get around to freezing it, it disappears from my fridge with surprising rapidity.

Pretty much anything that tastes good or that is bad for you. Whereas the tofu and broccoli seems to be pretty easy to ignore. Along with carrots or anything else in the veggie bin. I guess if I had to chose one thing that I can't stop eating it would be really great dry sharp cheddar sitting atop a thin layer of fig jam atop a good cracker.

I can't keep those cheap frozen burritos in my house as I get cravings for them and you can buy a lot of them for a little money. They take less than a minute to heat in the microwave if you thawed them in the fridge that they offer almost instant gratification but have all the bad calories in them! Also, frozen spring rolls (the kind that get the flaky crispy texture on the outside) that you cook in the oven. I usually eat them the first day I buy them even though I say I am not going to!

Kettle chips. Any kind. Vinegar and salt, jalapeno, regular... it doesn't matter. Just hang the bag from my chin like a feed bag. Regular potato chips and Doritos hold the honorable mention spot. Snyder's of Hanover Jalapeno Pretzel Pieces. Entemann's coffee cake; can eat half at a sitting with a pot of coffee and call it dinner. And I don't like donuts with the exception of Entemann's chocolate covered donuts. My preference is to refrigerate them so the chocolate gets hardened. Again: half a box can go in a sitting. Nuts (except for peanuts) and seeds, although I don't feel *quite* as guilty for gorging on those.

I can't keep black licorice in the house. Our Wegmans used to have licorice allsorts (my ALL TIME FAVORITE) in the bulk section, and when it was fresh (soft and yummy!), every now and then, I'd pick up a half pound or so "just to keep around." I'll take a handful, and put the rest away, eat the handful, and get another handful, and so on, until there's not enough left in the package to bother putting it away.
I'll admit - I only stopped buying it when I stopped being able to get it in bulk.
Now I've found Panda licorice, which at least comes in a sealed box - it's safe for a bit - until it's opened.
And now the DOG has taken a liking to licorice, so when I do have it, I can't even enjoy it in peace anymore!

It's usually brie cheese and pickles for me. Pickles sound pretty innocuous, but I could literally eat a jar in a day if I let myself. When they're in the fridge, I have to grab one anytime I'm on the same floor as the kitchen.
I've just now stopped buying chile-limon blue corn chips from Fresh and Easy because I was one step away from mainlining those suckers. I ate them for dinner one night last week. Literally just chips. I tried to talk myself into at least having a few bites of chicken so I could get some protein, but wound up opting for another handful of chips instead.

[good] cheese & pickles get me too. i tend not to keep really good cheese in the house - i just buy small amounts when i need it for something. (i always have light string cheese on hand, but that isn't nearly as tempting as a really good aged cheese).
re: pickles, the worst for me is pickled okra. the only thing that keeps me from inhaling half a jar at once is the salt - i'm sodium-sensitive and if i overdo it i can literally *feel* my calves and feet start to swell. that's enough of a reason for me to exercise self control :)

Don't worry about it, figured someone in the region may have seen it somewhere as I absolutely adore okra, as my screen name says "bamia" which is the arabic word for it and I never knew it was available pickled.
The closest thing to what the posted who mentioned it above for me was eating them out of the can, which was okra in salted water with a tomato in it for slight acidity (and freshness?)

That's so funny. That little half sandwich trick, yes I thought I invented that. Yes that one and the small dinner roll sammies. I love to make little sammies on soft potato rolls otr the sweet Hawiaan bread rolls. I to use the leftovers from the turkey during Holidays, or the Easter ham. Take the ham, fry it barely just enough to get the fat crunchy, slather mayo and a bit of mustard and the warm ham, between the soft rolls...

re: buttertart
my mom's is a very simple and moist cornbread stuffing. i think one's taste in dressing is what you grew up with. some dressings may take you away to that "wow" place, but i think we all hanker for the good home-style dressing we love from our childhood. (i'm talking about a mom who knew how to make dressing. sorry for those whose moms did not...).

re: alkapal
Everybody but me loved my mom's and love my MIL's but I just don't get the appeal. Both are bread-based, not cornbread. That may be part of it because I'm sure cornbread would taste better with poultry. I've only ever made stuffing/dressing once or twice in my whole life to tell the truth- could you share your dear mom's recipe? Seriously,
This entire thread and no one on the pickle train?
ANY vegetable pickle (outside of some of the odder (to my palate) asian pickles) will do.
I think the last batch (2 quarts ) of pickled onions I made barely made it into cocktails.
Dill pickled carrots. Pickled brussel sprouts. Sweet gherkins. Cornichons.
Slightly (2 minute) boiled carrot slices + lemon juice + sherry vinegar + cumin + olive oil + parsley + oregano + smoked paprika + garlic = crack the next day after marinading overnight.
I hear the Almond/pistachio/cheese love as well.
Cold beer in the fridge (oddly, cocktails / wine don't seem to disappear as fast!). I store mine at room temperature in the closet until I know I need to put it on ice. Or they just disappear fast after work, constantly.
Fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt cups disappear instantly.
Oddly, I inhale 2-3 red cabbages a week somehow too. I blame it on growing up in cabbage country. Sliced thin with a red onion, some neutral oil, scandalous amounts of pepper, pinch of salt, pinch of sugar, white vinegar, chopped pistachios if I'm feeling fancy. It's the perfect salty crunch and I've been eating it as long as I can remember (it's the first thing I remember my dad feeding me). I've got the misses addicted to it too. Stains like no tomorrow though.

That was when Fritos Scoops had just come out. Now that's something I never buy for the house, I could scarf down a million of those puppies. So funny, because I remember when seemingly everyone I knew was bonkers over sour cream and onion potato chips back when they first came out. (Was that in the eighties?) I HATED them, and my friends thought I was nuts. Give me sour cream dip and plain potato chips, thanks. But, yeah, I do have a fondness for salt and vinegar chips. The added benefit is that you can't really eat the whole bag because your tongue will just shrivel (well, not really, but you know what I mean) from all the vinegar flavor. I saw that Cape Cod is making those now, and am curious.

My 3 year old daughter has this OBSESSION with Ritz crackers topped with thick banana slices. I have been serving this to her for the past 6 months and never bothered to try this snack that she loves until last week. I now can hardly control myself. I think she is onto something. The perfect balance of salty crunch with sweet. It's delicious!
re: DishDelish
have you tried it with the "low sodium" ritz? to get a clue about its popularity, check out the location of the low sodium box in their "line-up." http://www.nabiscoworld.com/ritz/varieties.aspx
or there is also the honey ritz! that would be good with the banana, too. now, to get your 3 year old to bounce off the walls, drizzle the ritz with honey.
~~~~~
<ritz as "oracle"? hmmm....they must be topping their ritzs with some new herbal spread! http://www.nabiscoworld.com/ritz/flip... >-
re: alkapal
Hey Alka, I didn't see this till now! I'm not on as much in the summer. :)
No, I haven't tried the low sodium, I usually buy the whole wheat, even though it doesn't have any more fiber. I've never seen the honey ritz before, though ... I'll be looking for it next time at the supermarket. Mmmmm, extra honey, she would bounce off the walls, but then have the inevitable drop off 10 minutes. My poor daughter doesn't do sweets too often except for the amazing LINDT chili infused dark chocolate that she asks for every day. I usually give her a corner after dinner (she once ate half a bar before breakfast which ruined our whole day so now I have to hide it). If you haven't tried it you must! It is addicting!-
re: DishDelish
i've never tried the savory-chocolate combinations.
i have a lebanese friend who grew up with chocolate for breakfast. i'm not sure if it was typical there, but maybe someone can tell us.
~~~~~~
ps the lindt truffles are not superb, but they are fun to eat with their liquidy center once the shell breaks through! ;-). ooh, now i wonder what would happen if i wrapped a truffle in brownie dough and then baked it in a mini muffin pan.....well, i know what would happen. 10 pounds.-
re: alkapal
:) good one alka...along the same lines did you ever see the mid-90s Pillsbury Bake-off winning recipe for a chocolate cookie, dough made with condensed milk, wrapped around a Kiss? I can't find it online (yet) but it was quite good. I have a sand cookie recipe from my MIL's friend that I often form around Kisses, the odd bit of dark chocolate, etc. V good rolled in walnuts or other nuts after and then baked.

Crunchy cheetos.... hmmm, a single affair? Cheetos are my regular go-to booty call. I've been good lately, but boy, you really know how to get me doing things I shouldn't do Alkapal! But that is why I love you.
Chocolate covered pretzels are evil. We slay them with alacrity in our house.
That spinach dip with water chestnuts - only when others will help us consume.
Matzoh crack (or rather crunch). again, only when others will help consume.

I am of course a member of the knorr's spinach vegetable dip club with water chestnuts! My guiltiest pleasure ever! (well, maybe not guiltiest. I recently downed an entire can of Chef-boy-ar-dee beef ravioli in the memory of Sam, I loved every bite of it).
Goodness, I may have to make a bowl of dip soon.... people or no people to share....

Nuts -- almonds, cashews, pecans, peanuts, madadamia nuts, pistachios, peanut butter, almond butter ... I can't not eat them. Even stale filberts ... Chocolate; Reese's peanut butter cups. Ice cream. There is no such thing as a bad potato chip. Good ones are better, though.
All are banned substances.

definitely potato chips, though especially Kettle Brand krinkle cut potato chips lightly salted. Fritos i just have to stay away from too.

CHIPS - BBQ chips of any kind, but first and foremost Lays - used to be Laura Scudders when i was a kid. in fact, lunch thru 4 years of high school was a bag of bbq chips, a brownie, and a coke. Alice Waters was nowhere to be seen! Plain chips too. Nacho Cheese Doritos. Maui onion chips too. and the newest flavor i love is Tim's Jalapeno chips (i don't buy any for the house, but maybe at a bar while playing pool....) Braunschweiger and/or liverwurst. if i do buy it, i tell the BF he has carte blanche to finish it off before i do, which he usually does, so that i'm lucky (in many ways!) to get a spoonful! because i could devour a whole tube in a day if left to my devices.

re: DishDelish
It starts with a can of SOLO brand Poppy seed filling--but don't use that straight. That stuff is foul by itself. We make a poppy seed custard, essentially, with it.
1 can poppy seed filling (12oz size, Solo brand)
1 beaten egg
1/2 c milk
1/2 c sugarCombine, cook on the stove top. Let it bubble a bit, become homogeneous, but you don't need to cook it for long. It's very forgiving. Let it cool completely before putting it in the shaped kolache dough, or you can do serious damage to the yeast.
You can also stretch the filling farther by adding more milk and white cake or cookie crumbs.

Might sound strange, but grapes. I don't care if they are green, red, globe, black, seedless, seeded, I'll eat every single one. Literally, Some days I'll eat 4 bags of grapes. Like a sickness. Ice cream. I will keep going back for "just another spoonful" until the entire container is gone. It would have to be a flavor I don't like before I stop doing that. If you want to keep ice cream all to yourself in my house, you had better like vanilla and butter pecan because those are a couple of the few flavors I stay away from.
Cheese - It is so hard not to eat cheese when it's in the house. My husband doesn't eat cheese, so if I have it around, I'm going to snarf entire blocks of it when he's not around.
Bacon/Prosciutto/Pancetta/Other cured pork products - I might buy these for a dish, but the leftovers are toast. I have resorted to freezign any bacon I don't eat, but I like to challenge myself with how fast I can thaw it! :-D

And Mr. Cheflambo must have in the house, at all times, Cheez-its, NOT Cheez Nips. Its "zitz" or nothing. They are always on my shopping list and there is always an "emergency box of zitz" stashed somewhere deep in the pantry.

re: DishDelish
miss delish, i'm not sure. are they sort of sweet? (and not really "new"?). i'm probably thinking of an older flavor that i wasn't crazy about. i always come back to the nacho cheese. <edit: i just looked at their site http://www.fritolay.com/our-snacks/do... , and think the one i had was "spicy sweet chili". so....it's not the same as yours. holy moly, where can i get "last call jalapeño popper flavored doritos"?!?!?!?>.
here on the east coast, we don't get some (most!) of those great-sounding flavors that frito-lay puts out in the s.w. united states. i wonder if that "poppers" flavor is one. or salsa verde, or cheesy enchiladas. ;-(.
edit -- again -- i used the dorito locator (!) and found local groceries where the popper flavor (at least) is allegedly sold. we'll see! (ps, did you hear my little hip hip hooray cheer?).

re: alkapal
OK my bad, they don't have any cheese. I didn't think they were that sweet, but they are called Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos so it is the one you tried. I like them ... but then I tend to dip mine in sour cream which probably tames the sweet flavor. This flavor is completely new to Alaska, but maybe not the other States.

We have a place here in AK called the AK Wild Berry factory (they have America's biggest chocolate water type fall) and come to think of it they make chocolate dipped pretzels ... so I think I have tried it in a sample and yes it is good, but when I am at the factory it is the other wonderful offerings that I can't stop eating like the mount mckinley chocolates with cashews, macadamia nuts, almonds or peanuts covered with chocolate and marshmellows .... Mmmmmm yum! Also love the chocolate covered peanut butter, and chocolate covered cherries. Ohhhh I better stay away from there. When I was a teenager my sister had a job at the AK railroad and the employees got 40 % off discounts at the factory, and we went there several times a week that summer. I think I gained alot of weight too.

re: DishDelish
The chocolate waterfall sounds very Willy Wonka! I looked for it on their link, but didn't find it; however, their slideshow of chocolate and toffee-making was pretty tempting. I always say I think I need to work in a candy store so I just get sick of it, but like you and your sis with the 40% discount, I have a feeling it would go the other way for me. ;) What a fun store!
-
re: kattyeyes
Working in a candy store works! I worked a year in a department store candy counter when I was 16. Took 20 years to be able to stand the smell of chocolate. About 30 years to begin to enjoy it again, Now, I could eat it daily again! I'm sure that job saving me many pounds....
The best part of the job was the fresh roasted nuts and just made caramel popcorn! I had never liked roasted nuts before. And the caramel popcorn was amazing.

re: kattyeyes
It is definitely one of my favorite little shops, kinda touristy but in a good way. If you ever order from them they also make delicious alaskan berry jams and jellies. The chocolate waterfall really isn't that big so i was surprised that it is the biggest but it is still pretty cool. =) Here is a pic I found online:
http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/medi...
I'm definitely glad that I never took a job at the factory as a teen! I used to be one of those teens that often ate when I was bored. I once gained 30 lbs. in one summer working as a breakfast hostess at a hotel. I don't have that issue anymore as I never get bored with my 3 kids. ;)-

<<But I think just about any local chocolate factory is going to have good chocolate.>> Oh god, yeah! Thus why any good chocolate has a pretty quick stay at my house. And it seems only right to eat it in a timely fashion (can't let it get stale, of course!).
Should your travels ever take you to Connecticut, chocolates with peanut butter centers from Munson's must be on your list of treats to try. For sure, I can't keep them in the house. The peanut butter is far too creamy and they just go down WAY too easily. MOO. :)

Cookies. Any kind of cookies, period. I have a hard and fast rule about buying cookies. No cookies in the house. Ice Cream, I can have one serving and the rest of the pint will sit in the freezer until I throw it out. Same goes for cakes or pies that I make or buy. Chips, nuts, pretzels can last a while around here. But I could blow through a package of cookies in an embarrassing amount of time. Like, when my husband knows I bought them two days earlier when he finally decides he wants one - but they are all gone.

I have a short but sinister list:
Potato Chips, large costco size bags can mysteriously disappear in three days
Peanut Butter, especially if I have chocolate chips around!
Ice Cream, but I usually cave and have ice cream in the house. I TRY to make a half gallon last a week, two if i'm really good! -

Ice cream. I know it's not economical but I'd rather have one Blizzard every couple weeks than inhale an entire tub of triple chocolate ice cream over two or three days. Cheerios Snack Mix is a killer... I consider the package to be single-serving. Luckily, I only have it every few years. I am actually a bit of a binge eater, so I do have to control myself. Oh, and if I'm in BC, Canada, I cannot stop eating Thrifty Food's Tzatziki. It should be illegal. Or imported to Alberta. One or the other.

I don't buy pistachios, or actually any nuts that are already roasted. Somehow I have trained myself not to eat them except in one ounce increments as long as they're stored raw in the freezer. I keep nut butters on the bottom shelf in the fridge because if they're at eye level, well, I'd snack on them a lot more often! So, yeah, I have an issue with nuts, I will admit.
My mom can't control herself around sliced or any kind of ready to eat cheese. It's funny how we both manage such red light foods in similar ways. She buys cheese in blocks, and I only buy nuts raw. I guess it's a case of "like mutha, like dotta!"

Chips. One bag = one serving, even the Costco-sized bags. This weakness extends to all small, dry, salty, crunchy things--chips, crackers, nuts--but chips are without question THE worst. Michael Season's cheese puffs top the list, closely followed by Barbara's...oh heck, who am I kidding, Nacho Cheese Doritos and Cheetos aren't safe in my house, either. Oreos
Potato Chips - Ripples, Wavy Lays etc.
We don't "keep" either of these in the house, but the Oreos get brought home from the store sometimes when they're on sale. Mr. bakinggirl and I can go through 3/4 of a package in one sitting. Potato chips are a nasty one; they normally get purchased when we have company over, and I can control myself when there are others to feed, but I have been known to eat a regular-sized bag of Utz rippled chips in one sitting. Cabot French Onion dip doesn't help.
Thanks to cycloneillini for the olive tip - I have wicked salt cravings and olives just might do the trick! -
Oreo/Joe Joes- Never liked them as a kid, but recently I have noticed that the box quickly disappears
Edaname- Nice healthy snack to keep in the freezer, but one too many tummy aches from eating whole bag at a time
Cheese puffs/ veggie chips/ edaname rice crackers or any other "healthy" potatoe chip substitute from Trader Joes- Because I don't get that greasy feel in my mouth like I do from potatoe chips It's too easy to eat a whole bag without realizing it.

CookieWeasel and Orchid64, we must be related! I LOVE Nutella! I seem to go on jags with it though. It can be sitting in my pantry untouched for weeks, then one night (it's always at night!) I find myself standing in front of the open pantry, plastic spoon in hand (it has to be a plastic spoon! It just tastes better...), enjoying that sweet, chocolately goodness straight out of the jar. I'll do that for a few nights in a row and then the craving settles down. Have you ever tried it spread on a banana split lengthwise and put back together? Delish!

I have a wood-fired pizza oven in my backyard, and last Friday night experimented with dessert pizzas after we'd had our fill of savory ones and had some dough left over. Nutella, mascarpone, and sprinkled brown sugar. 90 seconds in the oven and it turned into the most delicious thing I'd ever tasted. Nutella is good, but this was divine.

re: cimui
Almonds..
They are not healthy (or cheap) at the rate I can get through them - especially marconas.
I nuke them in 10 second bursts on high stirring between blasts till they are starting to brown (they burn very easily). Then leave them a minute or so till they crisp up and cool down, shake on some salt (optional) and munch.Regarding potato chips etc - I don't buy that sort of stuff anyway, except when I want to be indulgent. It's 'danger ingredients' intended for cooking that call my name.

Hah, I guess that was my mistake. I only just discovered these chips, and have today put them on my 'do not eat' list.
I thought it was just me about these foods ! Also on this list, in order of most dangerous:
ice cream
donuts
cheese
peanut butter
peanuts
dessert items
Kettle potato chipsNaturally, I'm going to have to make a list of what other people don't eat so I can try them...at least once!

re: cimui
Agreed with the good chips. I can keep Lays or Wise in my apartment until they go stale. But good chips are dangerous for me.
I'll also have to say gianduja chocolate. I can keep darker chocolate for a while because I can't eat a lot in one sitting due to their bitterness. But gianduja is so easy to eat. Somebody should invent gianduja coated potato chips. I've had chocolate covered potato chips before and they really go well together.

re: Miss Needle
So true about Lays / Wise / most commercial chips. I've forgotten about bags in my pantry, before -- something that would never, ever happen with good chips!
My downfall is kettle cooked chips in general (not just the Kettle Chips brand). Did you ever go to Absolutely 4th in the West Village? It was a cocktail bar, now closed, that used to serve very sweet, 'girly' cocktails -- kind of appalling in retrospect. (Think neon blue and green drinks, apple 'martinis', etc...) They had some of the best housemade, kettle-cooked potato chips, ever, though, which they'd bring to your table, warm, during happy hours. I'm embarrassed to admit that more than once, in grad school, I made a meal of these two-for-one cocktails and potato chips...
I think *you* should invent gianduja covered potato chips!

this is funny - you mean there are people like me?
cheese
Cadbury's chocolate
dried prunes - I just love them but the tummy ache later isn't worth it
Baileys Irish Cream
fresh bread
cheese danish pastries
Publix fried potato and meat balls - Cuban style I think sort of croquettes

I think there are lots of people like you...
I absolutely do not keep any sort of salty snack in the house except for Smart Balance microwave popcorn. Cheetos, Fritos, Lays potato chips... I love all of them and cannot step away from the bag. So, I just don't buy them. If I have a salt craving, I pop a few olives and I'm good to go. A jar of olives can last me for a month.

re: DishDelish
The bread itself won't be as good tomorrow, but the next day, it's perfect for making either a strata (which is one of my new favorite things to do with leftover good bread) or chocolate bread pudding.
I can't keep Choco Leibniz cookies in the house because they go down way too easy. And the almond bars I've made twice since krisrishere posted them...those are dangerous!!! And easy to make, so even more so!
Edit: And thankfully, these only show up once a year because I can't resist them whatsoever: Thin Mints--the Girl Scout cookies!

re: DishDelish
i used to get so upset with my college roommate when she brought Thin Mints & Tagalongs into the house. those things are dangerous! ever had a frozen Tagalong? insanely good. i've gotta say, one of the only good things about being gluten-free is that stuff like that isn't even an option anymore.
-
re: goodhealthgourmet
I honestly can't remember trying the Tagalogs, and I can't figure out why I never did with my love of all things with peanut butter. I googled it cause I couldn't remember what this cookie was, and apparently the Dairy Queen had a partnership with girls scouts last month and it was their blizzard flavor of the month. It looked good in the picture.
Well I am not gluten free, however my hubby is generally not a big fan of sweets (particularly chocolate) so we just don't have them laying around that often ... I guess it is a good thing for me cause I used to eat a lot more chocolate. =)

Crunchy cheetos. Pistachios. Pistachios really are my downfall, b/c not only are they my favorite nuts (ok, after walnuts maybe), but the whole tactile experience of prying them open plays into my fidgetiness.... so before I know it, I've got a pile of pistachio shells in front of me, and a tad bit more 'good' fat inside of me than necessary >sigh<

I didn't think there was a food I can't keep around, but no, I forgot how weak-willed I am when there are cashews in the house. I could eat an entire canister in a sitting. As an aside, you haven't seen cashews in shells because they're notoriously hard to crack. It's one of the reasons they're so expensive compared to other nuts.

re: JungMann
It's not that the shells are hard to crack, it's the caustic liquid that is between the nut and the outer 'peel'. We have a cashew tree in front of our house, which I thought was pretty exciting until I learned just how messy/burn-inducing/time-consuming they are to process. Now I gladly pay the extra money, knowing how much work is involved. By the way, there is a fruit that grows under the nut (yes, it looks strange and exotic) that looks sort of like an apple and has a similar flavor except that it has an alum-like quality that dries your mouth and makes you pucker. People around here either love them or don't.
