Pittsburgh - Casual dinner in downtown area (or walking distance)
I'll be in Pittsburgh next week, staying at the Rennaissance, and will be dining with a group of 5 midweek. Any suggestions for nearby spots that fall within the following parameters? Entrees (generally) under $20; walking distance or short cab ride from Renaissance; new american, mexican/southwestern, asian, french foods all ok (no italian, please, unless it's super good); outdoor seating would be a plus. Thanks in advance for suggestions!

Considering your parameters, I also agree with the Six Penn Kitchen recommendation - I think it would fall in the 'new american' realm.
I also enjoy Seviche, another spot within walking distance of your hotel - this place has a latin/asian flair - no outdoor seating though and no reservations - more of a trendy bar feel.

Six Penn Kitchen might be a good choice. It's very good and has an outdoor rooftop deck. I like it because although you are right in the middle of the city, being on the roof isolates you from all the noise and such. It's also very close to your hotel. This is not a "very fine dining" establishment, but it's a very good choice without the huge price...It still may strech your budget though...
If you are with a group and want to have a drink with one of the best views in America (I'm not kidding) take a cab to Mount Washington and have a drink at Monterey Bay. Incredible!!! You can eat there too, but not on that budget!
