Best Buys - Rehoboth Beach

S. Woody Aug 18, 2009 08:31 AM

Last night, my partner and I went to Lupo di Mare (247 C Rehoboth Avenue, at the Rehoboth Hotel, Rehoboth Beach DE, lupodimarerehoboth.com) for their $19 prix fix. This is definately a bargain, since the entrees run $16-19 on their regular menu, plus there's the first course of "tastes" or salad, and a dessert. The only catch is that you have to be seated before six.

I started with the white bean and roasted garlic dip, seasoned with truffle oil and lemon zest and served with crostini, while Bruce had the shaved Brussels sprouts (again with truffle oil, plus pecorino). I enjoyed mine, and Bruce found the sprouts wonderfully crunchy and a surprise, although he would have liked something else added for a texture contrast. Moving to the second course, I had the Veal Picatta (lots of lemon, tons of capers, served on linguine with herb pesto, very delicious) and Bruce went for the eggplant rigatoni. The only disappointment were the desserts: he found the bread pudding lacked contrasts in flavor, and my tiramisu was creamy but bland. Still, the meal was a very good one, and the staff was attentive and friendly.

Another bargain, up on Highway One, are the Happy Hour specials at the Pickled Pig, a great way to kick back, enjoy a brew and an appetizer at the bar for a very low price. We went a week ago, after I got off work - I hadn't even changed out of my summer work-tee, and spent the time advertising the store where I work! He had the BBQ-sauced oysters, a real treat for him since I've never mastered cooking bivalves at home, and I had the fish tacos. The fish was nicely breaded, crunchy and tender, and served on a couple of soft tortillas with a slaw, some pickled red onions, and with sliced fresh jalapenos on the side to be added at the diner's discretion. The total bill, with tip, for the two apps and three brewskies (hey, I was thirsty!) came to just $21.

So, are there any other great bargains out there in the Rehoboth area?

I think the Big Fish Grill on Route 1 gives you a lot of good food for the money.

I wonder if Lupo di Mare's sister restaurants -- Fish On! etc -- have similar deals? Since we are staying in Lewes next week we might have one of our "nicer" meals at Fish On! which we have enjoyed very much on two previous visits.

Otherwise we'll probably hit some of our favorites in the moderate to cheap range -- Big Fish, Go Fish (ya think we like seafood?), Louie's Pizza, and the new Jimmy's Grille.

According to their website (www.fishon.biz), Fish On! does have a $19 three-course chef's selection deal, but only on Sundays. I'd call ahead to find out the details, of course (877-871-FISH).

thanks -- as soon as I posted I went to check their website. If the choices are good, that would be a great deal.

I wish they posted their kids' menu on line, but as long as it includes chicken and shrimp we should be ok.

Wow. This is a really nice review. Thank you. We will eventually get to these restaurants. I might just ride my bike down the trail to Lupo soon for that white bean dip with crostini and a glass of wine. The Pickled Pig sounds like it has my name written all over it - a place to "kick back." Three beers are normal for me! I rarely drive.
      S. Woody, I think the best bargains are coming in September. In Lewes we will soon be able to buy a bottle of wine at Half Full and get a free pizza then at Striper Bites we can get half-price burgers again soon. Which nights I do not know yet but I will let you know.
Also, Adriatico has a great deal on Wednesday nights all year. If you pay with cash you get an entree free with an entree. http://www.rehoboth.com/adriatico/spe...

Lewes....is the address for Adriatico at 18585 Coastal Highway in Ocean City, Md. or Delaware? Which is the better of the two locations?
        Thank you.

Hi again shopgirl. Both are in Rehoboth. The downtown Adriatico is definitely better (with a dining porch facing Baltimore Avenue) but I think the deals are only offered at the Midway location.

We loved Lupo di Mare when we tried it in June.

Another good choice - in addition to those mentioned here - is Cafe Sole. During the off-season entrees are two for one, and the food is really good. They have a small menu. The clientele is local. It's on Baltimore Ave. A tried and true favorite of ours.

Here's a link to their website menu:
