So there are 8 of us who all went to University of Michigan together --ahem--some years ago. Several coming from other parts of the country. Need a place where we can yak and hear each other, won't break the bank, can get a drink and has good chow.

From other hounds' suggestions considering:
Metzger's
Casey's
Blue Tractor
The Earle
Gratzi

Chance to really enjoy each others' company and not feel rushed is important.

Thanks! Chow!

My thoughts on your suggestions:

Metzgers: Haven't been since they moved to 94 and Zeeb, so can't comment on atmosphere--just wanted you to be aware they are no longer downtown.

Caseys--a great hanging out choice EXCEPT they don't have a lot of room--not sure if they can accomodate 8. I would call and see. Also if they are busy, it gets noisy, esp. if there is a game on. You may want to consider Red Hawk (owned by the same people) which has a bit more room. I'd still call ahead though.

Blue Tractor--haven't been sorry. My impression is it's on the loud side.

The Earle--quiet unless it's a weekend when they often have a jazz combo or piano. Definitely more expensive than Caseys, but they rarely rush you out. This would be my top of your picks. If you sit on the bar side, that menu is less expensive.

Gratzi--very noisy and on the high end price-wise.

A couple of hanging out options are Cafe Felix--they won't kick you out and you can sit indoors or out--but the food is just ok. Dominicks (still by the law quad) has terrible food, but is a great place to visit and drink.

I'll try to think of some better options. Hard to think of a quiet place with good food that can take 8 easily.
