Searching for West African Beer in MD/DC

Anjou Aug 17, 2009 12:13 PM

Hey folks. I am on a mission to locate some West African beer (primarily from Benin, Togo, or Niger.) I'd love suggestions for beer stores in MD or DC where I could purchase something along these lines: Flag, La Beninoise, Biere Niger or Star. I've been looking for some time now, and I seem to be hitting a wall. Any suggestions are welcome.

I always recommend Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits. Huge selection of beers and a very informed staff. If the beers you want are around, they'll have it or be able to get it for you.

A great selection of singles from around the world...

It might be worth calling the Perfect Pour in Columbia to see if they have it. Their beer selection is pretty wide ranging.

Look, people keep recommending these beer and liquor stores like they're gonna carry Star or Flag, or whatever. They'll never have anything 'sides Tusker.
You need to go to the source. As far as DC is concerned, you've got two choices: Brickskeller's or Eithiopian restaurants. I've had a Castel at Brick's, yet I've heard they stopped carrying it, and Eithiopian restaurants will sometimes carry random West African beers. Call to inquire. Otherwise, you'd have to chat with the extensive West African community in DC... Even if they're Muslim, they'll probably know...good luck.

Ghana Cafe (Logan Circle-ish) serves Star: http://www.ghanacafe.com/beers.asp . No idea if they'll sell you a six-pack but maybe worth a shot.

They also used to serve Gulder, Ngoma, and Mambo. Haven't been there in a while, though, so they might not anymore.
