Who makes the best Pasta con Sarde?

I don't know about the best, but it's pretty great from Ferdinando's Focacceria on Union/Columbia in Carroll Gardens. Now I'm craving it.

I'm torn between Piattini, which makes a fresh, funky rendition, and Joe's of Avenue U, which makes the gloppy, sweet version. The former is almost elegant, with fresh sardines and whole pine nuts, raisins, but little fennel. The latter is oily, pungent, and delicious, but almost in junk food kind of way.

Both are worth visiting, Piattini stands out because of its excellent gelato (best I've had in the US) and more elegant surroundings, while Joe's is worth visting for its excellent rice balls, Sicilian-language menus, carafes of cold red wine, and general "old Brooklyn" vibe.

Thanks. I'll try Joe's this week and let you know.
