Thai Room (West Hartford, CT)

kattyeyes Aug 16, 2009 04:07 PM

Today I met someone born in Thailand. When I asked where she liked to go out to eat for Thai, she highly recommended Thai Room in West Hartford. It's in Shield St. Plaza next to A Dong Market. I haven't heard of it before and I checked this board--nothing turned up. I'd love to give it a try. Has anyone been?

Hmm, is that the place that used to be called Dim Sum?

I'm not sure. Seems there has been some turnover in that plaza over the years. The person I met cooks Thai at home, also worked at both Thai places in Middletown and was VERY enthusiastic about Thai Room. I'm eager to try it.

Thanks, Don. I actually searched this board for "Thai Room" and nothing came up, not even when I switched the radio button to "relevance"...did you have it saved in your favorites, or how did you find the old thread? I do appreciate it, but it puzzles me why I couldn't find it myself, so I'd love to know the trick. Glad to see the other posters agreed this was a special place for Thai!

How bizarre is that--Google will pull up the results but the search function on this site comes up empty? Thanks for the tip.

Ya can use the "site:" function of Google, for example, http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&am...

I got my results within Chowhound by searching the New England board and using < "thai room" hartford > and choosing "all years".

                  BTW, with "all years" selected,
thai + hartford produces 124 hits,
thai room + hartford produces 42 hits.
"thai room" hartford or "thai room" + harford produces 5 hits (all relevant).

Went today for lunch. The restaurant is basic (read: not fancy) and in the corner of the plaza, right next to A Dong. I had a bowl of tom ka gai to begin. The soup was very fresh and flavorful with shaved pieces of galangal and was quite delicious. My only quibble about it was that the onions and peppers were rather large and were a little hard to manage with a spoon, but going on pure taste, it was great!

My guy started his meal with tom yum seafood, which he found spicy and enjoyable. Lucky for me, he decided to try something new to accompany the meal--mango juice. It seemed to have a frozen mango ice cube in it that melted throughout the meal. I kept stealing sips as it was a refreshing, cool contrast with my spicy chicken larb, served with sticky rice. My guy had Thai beef steak and was pleased with his meal. The portions are VERY generous and more than enough for one person to eat--more suitable for sharing or leftovers.

It's been a while since we've eaten at The King & I in Hartford. That was our go-to Thai place for years. I'd want to compare dish for dish to be able to say which I prefer. I find the atmosphere at The King & I to be cozier (probably because of its size and the fact it is in a house!), but certainly the service in both places is very friendly. I'd say if you're looking for Thai in the Greater Hartford area, Thai Room should be on your list, but don't discount The King & I--both are good in my book.

I live in West Hartford, and prefer the Thai food at the East West Grill (New Park Avenue). It's cheap and fabulous!

A lot of people like East West, and a lot of people like various other places of course.. My favorite is still Lemon Grass, which has it's haters as well. I guess it all comes down to personal taste.

Agree re personal taste. Re Lemon Grass, I'd be one of its haters. I haven't been to East West in a while, but I'll stick to King & I if I'm in the Hartford area and Thai Angel in Glastonbury (closer to home for me).

Based on some of the feedback I'd heard/read about Thai Room, I expected mindblowing. It was good, but not mindblowing.

I was there a year or two ago when it first opened. It was good but not memorable.
