DARK SEXY NYC BARS FOR AFTER DINNER INTIMACY!!
SO, very hot date coming up this Friday. Drinks before dinner at Four Seasons Restaurant (at their beautiful bar next to the Grill Room). Then dinner at the counter of L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon. Then after - want/need a really sexy, dark bar for a round of drinks and intimate conversation into the wee hours. As long as it's in Manhattan, location doesn't matter, but would probably prefer downtown-ish, all other things being equal. Somewhere with terrific cocktails and/or wine list, and VERY conducive to intimate discussion and getting close! :-) In the old days (five years ago), the sort of place I'd be describing would be Temple Bar on Lafayette. But if there are other or better suggestions, would LOVE to hear yours!

Ended up at both Pegu Club and Raines Law Room this past week and either could suit: Pegu Club's cocktails are better, but Raines Law Room (17th between 5th and 6th) is very dark, very intimate (some tables have net curtains that pull around them, others cozy little couches), and I think a much sexier atmosphere. (The cocktails are still good, too). In fact, being at Raines Law Room with a female friend seemed a bit sillly -- the atmosphere (waitress carries a candle on her tray that illuminates cocktails as she serves them) is clearly seduction oriented).
The tables in the back at Angel's Share can be pretty romantic. Not insane about their cocktails.
Temple Bar... was certainly a great place for that sort of thing in the mid-90s. Haven't been in at least 10 years, but I can attest that it had the magic once upon a time!

Temple could probably use some new upholstery, but I would still recommend it. It's still dark, elegant, great music and vibe, professional bartenders and waitresses - and best of all for these purposes, it has enough space between tables that you can smooch in a corner without feeling like you're displaying or having to see others doing so. At many others - Angel's Share, Little Branch, Pegu Club - I feel so close to the next party that I may as well be sitting at the bar. I may be fine with that if the drinks are good enough (hello, Pegu Club), but for a romantic liaison I'd still head to Temple after all these years.

Highly recommend Pegu Club.Top notch drinks and service.Dark intimate space, that also can have a very lively crowd.Lots of seating at tables around the room.Second the Flute rec. in Gramercy.Champagne in a romantic setting. It's right next to the Gramercy Tavern, which is one of my favorite bars, but probably not what you're looking for
in this case.Campbell Apartment in Grand Central is also a sexy spot.Good cocktails. One of my favorite places to drink downtown is Dylan Prime in Tribeca,It's a steakhouse, but it has a separate bar area.Good drinks and wine list .Also the King Cole Bar in the St. Regis Hotel.›1 Reply -

Temple Bar is still a good choice. But also consider White Star, on Essex near Hester St. The drinks are excellent, and the back part of the bar has dark booths that feel very private (check out the slideshow on the NYMag page, below).
