Where can I buy Whelks in Boston / Cambridge, and how to prepare them at home?

Hi all,

I have a friend coming in from overseas who has requested some new england Whelks for dinner.

What are whelks? http://www.okeefes.org/Whelks/Whelks.htm

Anyway, apparently they are actually exported from here to -all- over the world, but for some reason they are not popular in the USA.

Does anyone know where I can buy fresh Whelks locally? And once I have them, how can I prepare them at home? I hear you have to cook them very slowly.

Please help me Obi-Won-K-Chow-Hounds, you're my only hope(s)!

  1. Super 88 usually has it in the seafood area... I know sometimes places mislabel it as conch.

    1. C-Mart in CTown had them last week.

      1. Go to Home Cooking Board for preparation.
