Not too pricey in Malibu

Karen K Aug 13, 2009 10:55 AM

Looking for a nice lunch place in Malibu; would like a nice view if possible, but not mandatory. Should include some vegetarian options.

If you like a little grit, try the Reel Inn on PCH.

      ..."Not tooooooo pricey in Malibu"...

Don't forget Ruby's Shake Shack (recently opened), they have more than just shakes, at the end of the Malibu Pier (Who's got a better Ocean View than that ?):

Geoffrey's, which "IS" Pricey; however, if your budget can stand $16 (*) and the chicken salad entree, and some free bread, is enough to tame your hunger pangs, than the elevated view is spectacular:

I've never not Valet parked at Geoffrey's, not sure if it's absolutely mandatory, which just adds more $ to the bottom line.

      (*) 2 + year old price.

But does Ruby's have vegetarian options? I thought it was a "diner", and not a very good one at that.

The new Ruby's is so fabu! The redo of the old pier buildings is magical and well done. Hamburgers though...no vegetarian fare.

I love Malibu Kitchen for lunch, but need to get there at the right time, otherwise the owner cuts off service. Crazy, but we all put up with it, cause the place is so charming. The meatloaf sandwich on ciabatta with provolone, coleslaw and russian dressing knocks me out. LOVE IT.

The Sunset does great dinners, everything from French to fresh seafood, Latin influences and Asian...it's a bistro and everything under 20 bucks! Crazy, but true. New chef there who is a knock out.

Actually they do have some vegan options. Not many, 3 actually, including a Vegwich. You can see them using the link I posted above, clicking on the right-hand menu page although the type is fuzzy and tough to read.

paradise cove isn't great - but it's not too bad.

        duke's is pretty good.

neither are foodie destinations, but both have a view. paradise cove's view is better imo.

Let me throw Spuzzo's into the mix. Ocean view on the outside patio. Inexpensive, FRESH food. I know I ride up with it 4 days a week in the elevator on the way to the gym.!!! Lots of vegetarian options also.

Also, great sandwiches at John's garden in a park at Cross creek. My daughter loves the salmon tacos at Howdy's, also at Cross creek.

not sure what your idea of "not too pricey" is, but Taverna Tony (Greek) has outdoor dining, views, and plenty of vegetarian options...

Really?! I was just in the Malibu country mart last Friday at lunchtime, and they were closed up tight. Interesting..........

Well, then by all means, get the swordfish or roast chicken oreganato, it's delish.

I felt ripped off at Taverna Tony's, most places you go you get free refills on coke, but not there, and they didn't tell us that, unless theyve changed I hate being ripped off.

Not sure if your vegetarian options can include fish but Malibu Seafood Fresh Fish Market and Patio Cafe at 25653 Pacific Coast Hwy (just north of Pepperdine) is very good, cheap, and has a nice view of the ocean (albeit obstructed by PCH).

Last time I tried to go to Bob Morris' place at Paradise Cove, we were told that there was a 2 hour wait. The parking is pretty expensive if I remember.

"The parking is pretty expensive if I remember."

The restaurant validates your parking if you spend more than $15 (or something like that) and you then get out for a nominal amount.

Dont know about vegetarian options, but the best atmosphere is at Bob Moris Beach Cafe at Paradise Cove, you can eat right on the sand if you wish.

I don't think I would consider Bob Morris' a Nice place for lunch. Not very good either. In fact pretty bad, except for the bar drinks.

Heck, Duke's has better food and it's not very good either. And the exact same view.

I've heard good things re: La Terza, just don't know if they're open for lunch or not. Also, there's Sunset at Zuma beach, but again, not sure if they're open for lunch, know they do do a brunch.

You may want to go over to the Malibu Lumber Yard and Country Mart. There are some decent spots in there, some super casual (John's deli), some super upscale (Nobu) and some in between (Marmalade Cafe). Good luck.

Ended up at Marmalade Cafe and liked it very much. Thanks for the recommendation.
