We are arriving in Rome this Friday evening (Aug. 14) and have already received good advice from the board on markets and delis that might be open in the coming week.

One more question...In Barcelona, where we live, on Sundays and during the holidays when most stores are closed, there are always grocery stores open in the non-Christian immigrant neighborhoods. Is there a part of Rome where there are a lot of Indian, Muslim or Asian immigrants which might be similar? Somewhere near a metro stop?

Rome's "Chinatown" is on and around Via Carlo Alberto, near the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele Metro stop. There's a public market in/on the piazza that has the largest selection of ethnic foods in Rome, but like the other public markets it's probably closed on August 15.

The market off of VE (it is not on the piazza anymore) is closed on 15th. There are a lot of chinese/asian markets around there, but they are closed, too.

The problem is not only that it is a religious holiday, so only those of the faith close; it is rather a traditional one, too, where it is custom to go to the sea (and the clever ones go to the mountains) so really everything closes except for those that explicitly cater to the tourists. I live in a residential area and almost everything has closed already, if not on the 1st, latest since the 8th, the only remaining supermarket is the Standa on Cola di Rienzo (under coin) but that will be closed on sat, too.

Actually I have to correct myself: I was just at my Standa supermarket on Via Cola di Rienzo and they told me they will be OPEN on sat & sun, no lunch break, till 8pm. They didn't know if this applies to the Trastevere one as well, but there is a good chance. And if that is closed, this one is open for sure!

I think there is a middle eastern concentration down around ostiense.
I am not familiar with the shopping options tho. You are staying in a residential neighborhood - there will have to be SOMETHING open.
