Skin reaction while tending vegetable garden

Perhaps this is a question for a botany expert:

I get a minor skin reaction to a variety of garden plant leaves. Slightly red, blotchy, itchy patches, not unlike a minor poison ivy reaction. I wash with soap and cool water and then I'm fine.

This happens when I am picking or tending to: strawberries, cucumbers, bush beans, and daisies. All of these plants have slightly prickly or hairy leaves/stems, but I'm not convinced that is the source. I am wondering if they have similar types of oils and if that's what I'm reacting to? I wonder if there are other plants like this?

Anyone else experience this or know what the cause/link is?

    1. I thought I was the only one! I get the same, mild-but-annoying reaction when I pick tomatoes.

          same here...with tomatoes.

          • I get the same contact dermatitis and it doesn't seem to matter if I wear gloves, unless I wear latex gloves in my gardening gloves.

It doesn't itch but the top layer of skin peels off approximately 3-4 days later. .

I just get a very mild, itchy, tingling sensation. Slight redness, but I figured that was from the scratching.

                • I seem to have that effect when I pick bush beans. My husband can't touch the tomato plants. I think this is relatively common - nothing to worry over - though I don't know what causes it.

                    1. It's common. I react to squash vines particularly, but also beans. I sometimes slip a light long-sleeved cotton shirt on to harvest. Some people say that putting lotion on right beforehand helps. Washing vigorously with cold water works best for me, the sooner the better.
