Seven Spices

This is a proposed modification to the 15 ingredients list. If you were allowed to have seven spices as "freebies" to open up your 15 ingredients list, what would those 7 spices be? For the purposes of this thread I am not considering alliums (onions, shallots, garlic, etc.) as spices, those would have to stay in your ingredient list.)

Im thinking mine would be:

1. Salt
2. Pepper
3. Sugar
4. Cinnamon
5. Basil
6. Oregano
7. Mustard

how does your list affect your 15 items?

Mine would now look like this

1. beef
2. chicken
3. milk
4. eggs
5. beans (yes cheating a bit, probably pinto if i have to pick one)
6. rice
7. corn
8. flour
9. carrot
10. onion
11. garlic
12. peppers (pushing the limits here too, red bell if i need to pick)
13. tomatoes
14. lemon
15. seven spices

Still not easy. I want to add pork, fish, and some kind of greens-probably spinach, and a fruit-maybe banana or apple. I know that those settling the west had to do with a whole lot less, makes you appreciate their lives - even if they did supplement their diet with what they found along the way.

spices should be one of the 15, but hey, who is counting

Oohhhhh. I though you were just separating spices from the list of 15 entirely.... My Bad.

          1. re: KiltedCook

i too thought it was the intent to give one 7 free spices -- in addition to the 15 "ingredient" list.

and bravo on the everglades seasoning, kilted cook! ;-).

      2. But I consider Mustard a condiment.....ketchup, mayo, mustard......etc. unless you mean dry mustard. And, oregano is an herb.

I was thinking powdered mustard, funny you should ask since there is a video clip about mixing dry mustard with liquids. Since I don't consider beer, wine, and water "food" but beverages, all i'm missing is vinegar, I was planning to substitute lemon for vinegar anyhow. Are condiments food? I figured I would have to make my own mayo and ketchup.

Aha.... my father would debate with you regarding the fact that beer IS a food considering it contains grains, hops and yeast.....and since you have rice on your list, couldn't you conceivably make rice vinegar???

            1. re: Gio

conceivably i could. i find it interesting how many of these chowhounds are contemplating butchering their own hogs and cattle, cleaning fowl, brewing beer, fermenting wine, and who knows what else. I don't remember the original question saying anything about quitting our jobs, having our friends help put up barns or root cellars, or getting permits to allow a milk cow in their 23rd floor condo. it all gives one pause, and i sure appreciate the variety of ingredients and flavors I have available to me, even if I rarely use them. I guess trying to get my visa or mastercard qualified as the single ingredient I could have would be cheating huh?

Hah... we've both come a long way... Baby!

        2. 1) salt
          2) cinnamon
          3) marjoram
          4) basil
          5) 5-spice powder
          6) szechuan peppercorns
          7) cumin

          1) flour
          2) eggs
          3) tomato
          4) red wine
          5) butter
          6) chicken
          7) bacon
          8) siracha
          9) soy sauce
          10) apples
          11) spinach
          12) feta
          13) garlic
          14) ginger
          15) 7 spices

I figure that way I can make my own pasta & doughs to mix things up. Wish I could get some more fruits & veggies on the list, but choosing just one of each I'm going with apples (available in decent quality year-round) and spinach (versatile - can go Italian, Asian, Greek, etc). Interesting how people differ on these.

          1. Salt
Cloves (possibly substituting Tarragon or Dill)
