Softserve ice cream closer than Dairy Joy?

I'm asking for a friend who NEEDS a soft-serve ice cream cone with jimmies. Of course I know of Dairy Joy in Weston, but is there anything great and closer?

Any chance Toscanini has soft serve? They have fro-yo and sorbet, but soft serve?

Thanks for leads.

  1. Two choices, in order of recommendation:

Kell's Kreme on Revere Beach Parkway, a block or so north of Kelly's. The single best soft-serve cone I have ever had.

Celebrity in Watertown. Closer still, and nearly as good.

I was hoping you'd chime in here Barmy -- I recall you having strong opinions about the topic. :-)

Kell's Kreme hands down. My 2nd and 3rd and 4th favs(in no particular order) are the ice cream/florist place on rt 16 in Everett and the soft serve place on Adams St in East Milton on the way to Quincy across from Montillios and Ron's in Hyde Park..

        2. yumyum, Carvel on Eastern Ave. in Malden has pretty creamy soft serve, so far the creamiest I've found. The vanilla at Louie's on Broadway in Somerville is also quite good. I didn't try the chocolate since the machine was broken.

I find that both are richer (i.e. seem to have more actual butterfat) than Dairy Joy or Celebrity in Watertown (no fried clams, though). I'm assuming both have jimmies.

Here's a post with lots of options, although not too many close to you.

There's an actual Carvel store around still?

            1. re: BarmyFotheringayPhipps

Yup. The setting isn't exactly relaxing since it's right on busy Eastern Ave., but the ice cream is still pretty creamy and the vanilla has a pretty natural taste. The chocolate flavor is decent, although I'd like it a bit more chocolatey. We like Celebrity, but find Carvel a bit richer.

Here's link to the three Mass. stores:

Meanwhile, I have to get to Kell's Kreme. My husband in particular is a real soft serve fan, and it sounds really good.

            2. re: bear

Do they still have Fudgy the Whale??

              1. re: Gabatta

Sorry, forgot to check! Next time...

                1. re: bear

never mind Fudgie the Whale, I want to know if they still have Cookie-Puss!

                  1. re: Ralphie_in_Boston

Cookie Puss and Fudgie, aaaah just rotate the ice cream mold 180 degrees and they are in fact the same.

This place in Salem does a pretty good frozen custard:

I haven't tried it, but what about this place in Arlington: www.thechillycow.com

Love it! Those commericials bring back memories.

              2. there is also dairy maid on broadway in everett

                1. Truly Yogurt in wellesley is delicious - i literally go there everynight! so good!

                  1. I second Kell's Kreme, although it's been a few years. I also recall enjoying a huge cone at a place on rte 16 in Everett, forget the name.

I have tried Louie's soft serve in the past which was fine but never really latched onto it, but not this year. Spadafora on Highland in Malden (hey Yum Yum, combine it with a trip to Fuloon, also have a really cheap banana split with hard or ss ice cream) and Celebrity (pricier/smaller, but better for a SS cone with a dip) have been my standbys this year. My suggestion, though, would be for YumYum to give Alexander's on Main St in Medford a try where I have only had the hard ice cream and let us know. As far as Louie's grape nut custard, as far as I know its Richardson's... which you can get it at a lot of places nearby, Alexander's, CB Scoops in Medford, Jay's in Malden, Dairy King in Everett, Spadafora... There also is one more ice cream place in Medford that I haven't found open ever but mostly in the offseason. I think the Chilly Cow has some, but not all Richardson's flavors. Alexander's, Jay's, New Deal Fruit have the Richardson's 1/2 gallons.

I like Kell's Kreme, but most people I know don't. It's definitely convenient to Boston, though.

                      2. I'm pretty sure Jimmies in Roslindale Village can hook you up. 99% positive they have soft serve, and as for the jimmies...

nope, no ss @ Friendly's. The ice cream stand in Lakin Sq in Quincy, they always had great ss.

                        1. Closer to where? Downtown Boston? Toscanini's has great ice cream but does not have soft serve. Closest to Boston would be Celebrity in Watertown.

                          1. You may have to bring your own jimmies but I think I remember soft serve on the menu at Summer Shack.

Hey, Penny, thanks for that reminder. I totally forgot about Summer Shack. My husband will be happy, since we drive by SS all the time!

                            2. Wow you guys. Thanks for all the ideas!

                              1. I know it's not too close, but I must chime in for Tasty Treat in Ashland. Soft serve orange sherbet and coffee IC. Get em twisted.

                                1. You can get soft serve at Sullivan's, and eat it while walking around Caslte Island. Or also in southie, I like the vanilla soft serve at the Boathouse on L st.

                                  1. Dairy Freeze on Adams Street in Quincy has soft serve.

That's the place that I was referring to in my post way up above. I couldn't remember the name of it. I've been going there since I was a little kid. About 3 yrs ago, they changed the type of soft serve and I didn't care for it. I didn't go back fr a few years but did try it again this year. I'm happy to say that they have the good stuff again.

And me as well. I'm so happy to hear the good stuff is back, and I missed the bad stuff!

                                    2. For what it's worth, Dairy Joy does not have jimmies!

Oh man. This is a BYOJ kind of situation I guess. Thanks for the clarification.

                                        1. re: yumyum

I know, you'd think they would. Of course, they'd charge an extra $1.50 if you wanted jimmies, but it would be a nice touch on a javaberry cone!
