Ran into Jason Siebert at last night's Cooks Confab. He is back in San Diego, and is working as a chef at Stone Bistro. Exciting news, hope to see him bringing back some of the same kinds of dishes he did at Cafe Cerise.

Josh, you should do a report on Cooks Confab.

I didn't try a lot of the food there, lots of commodity meat on those plates. There were a few people using pastured meat, so I did sample a few things that were really good, but I didn't try most of the beer pairings. A friend of mine and I taught a beer class before the event for some of the attendees, so I wasn't really in "reviewer" mode.

The highlight for me was definitely Amy Di Biase's dessert. Hazelnut brown butter cake with Ballast Point Navigator doppelbock gelato, topped with caramel sauce, bing cherries, and candied orange peel. Incredible!

Waters' Catering had a really delicious pork belly dish, which paired quite well with Lost Abbey's Cuvee de Tomme.

My experience there was too incomplete to write a report, though.

What good news. I was just thinking of Seibert recently and all the fun meals and times I'd had at Cafe Cerise before it closed. He'd gone to L.A. to work for Puck Catering for a couple of years; he never seemed like much of an L.A.-kind-of guy, so I'm not surprised he's back. Last I heard he was engaged to a local law student, so maybe she got a position locally. Gotta believe the gig at Stone Bistro will be temporary until someone discovers he's back.
