Northern Hilton Head - what's good up there?

lynnlato Aug 10, 2009 08:58 AM

We have been traveling to HHI a few times a year for many years and have never explored the northern part of the island. We've always stayed in Sea Pines, but this weekend we will be staying at The Westin in the Port Royal area.

Are there any good restaurants worth seeking out up here? Favorites of ours on the island are Sea Shack, Alligator Grille, Flamingo's, Frankie Bones, etc. We're looking for casual, family friendly eats (dinner) with a nice atmosphere. No chain concepts and no Italian or Asian.

After doing some research on the boards, here are some places we are considering:

Shrimp Michaels

Grumpy Grouper - I know its not up North, but I heard they have the best takeout peel n' eats on the island. True?

Frankie Bones - yes, we've already been there, but its easy and we may do it again.

Any suggestions will be appreciated! Thanks!

Try Hudson's on the Dock. Its your best chance for local shrimp. Pretty kid friendly, too. Its on Squire Pope Road with a water view.

I've been Hudson's several times (not by choice) and was always underwhelmed. I guess we'll just have to stick with my original list and maybe make the drive to Sea Shack. Dale, you're a local, what is the story with the lack of locally sourced seafood in the island restaurants?

        Lynn: No idea. Sorry.

After careful consideration, there are literally no "casual, kid-friendly" places I'd recommend that you didn't mention in your original post. There are certainly no places that serve "local seafood", 90% of the seafood served on the island these days is *not* local, unless you get wahoo.

Wow, that's encouraging (t-i-c). I mean, I know the HHI restaurant scene leaves something to be desired, but nothing casual for families? The majority of folks visiting the island are families with children. Is it just that there's not much up on the northern end?

The shrimp are local, aren't they? We always bought gorgeous shrimp at Piggly Wiggly and were told they were local. You mean the restos don't serve local shrimp? What is the story with seafood in HH. Why is seafood not sourced locally?

I live on the island and I'll give you my two current favorites:

Riviera Oaks on New Orleans Road and across the walk from Michael Anthony's. (Sorry, South end.) Amazing interior, good bar and food.

For the best pizza on the island its Il Carpaccio at Pineland Station, corner of US 278 and Mathews Drive (North end).

Thanks Dale, but we're interested in staying up north and we need kid-friendly & casual. While Riviera Oaks looks interesting, it's not appropriate for this trip. Also, we really aren't interested in pizza/Italian. We're mostly looking for local spots that serve up what's good - local seafood. ;-)
