Grabbed an after-work dinner with the wife here last night. For a Sunday, there were a fair number of people in the pleasant sunshiny tables, although the view, of a Denny's and SuperTarget, leaves much to be desired. Started with two cocktails--she got the Jackson Pollock, a gin and basil oil concoction that was quite tasty, and I, for some reason, got the bacon manhattan, with house-made cherry liqueur (not sure if I believe this was house-made, although I'm a cynical man when it comes to restaurants and their claims). The manhattan was nicely done, and the smokiness came through with the bacon, although bacon and drinks always signifies novelty to me, and this is what it was. Not a drink I'd order regularly.
As for food, ordered the blue cheese meatloaf and an app of fried cheese curds. Curds were done in a light, almost ethereal scallion batter, with a smoked ketchup on the side (there's a lot of smoked items on the menu--they must have an industrial, electric smoker inside--although I have my own smoker and an electric one it definitely is not, I'll take the flavor sometimes, though I shun restaurants that offer "pulled pork" and do not have a real wood smoker--this is on account of my southern parentage and fierce love of the pig).
I loved the cheese curds, although the wife likened the batter to the lighter type served "at, I don't know, a Long John Silver's or something." How she holds this knowledge I'd rather not know.
The blue cheese meatloaf, four slices of what seemed to be a non-beef mixture--turkey and pork, thought I, (for $15.95) atop a potato puree with a pear chutney atop that, was delicious. 16 bucks seemed a little much, until I considered that if you split this, two slices of this loaf for 8 bucks seemed reasonable. There is, of course, the law of diminishing returns which holds true at any restaurant--a force, I think, behind the climb of appetizer prices on many restaurant menus to nearly match entree prices. Smaller things are good, and restaurants realize this, though they are by and large ruining our drive to try them.
At any rate--town talk diner. Not the best atmosphere, though food was delicious. I'd go back for a cocktail. Seems a little pricey for comfort food with my thin wallet, but the food was worth it.
