Haven't been past the Royal on 535 in Sayreville for a month or more and yesterday saw it was closed - for sale sign in the window .
Anyone know if they've moved or is it closed for good ?

  1. According to posts on other forums, the IRS seized it for non-payment of taxes.

I'm going to miss those jelly donuts.

    2. Rumor has it that Royal Bakery will re-open hopefully in Oct. 09 with new owners. However they will be working with original owners to keep product line the same. Let's hope so!!!

      1. Ahhhhaayya! Closed? First Sitzes on Whitehead Ave in SR (years ago), now Royal. Help! Where can I go in the area for my corn rye fix? When we'd visit, I'd order 4 big, round loaves of corn rye from Royal, drive back to bread Hell Maine and put the loaves in the freezer! Where else to buy corn rye w/out going into the city???

          Pass,

For what it's worth, Freedman's Bakery in Belmar sells corn rye loaves. I don't know if you have much reason to be at the Shore (or in Jersey for that matter), but should you "pass" this way . . .

Thanks, Belmar ain't far down Rt 35. We gotta get down for my Jersey food fix; an E Bruns-SR-Old Bridge kolbasi run.

I can't make a return trip from Maine to NJ without stopping at Golemo's Market in Worcester, MA for my kielbasa fix. One of these days I'll hafta make the shorter trip to the NJ markets.

        2. ROYAL BAKERY is back OPEN .........AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutly LOVE their rye bread as well as brownies, canollis, butter cookies, cream puffs......I will just say I love it all and am sooooooo happy they are open again. I made the mistake of getting there in the late afternoon and the hard rolls and seedless ryes were all gone. :( I did notice they remodeled the inside ( which looks really nice and seems bigger, and did see some new faces. I asked if they still had the same baker, and they said yes but new management.....and it sure tastes the same, absolutely delicious. I can't wait to get some potato and cheese pierogi on my next visit. I recommend a visit to this landmark bakery.....you will not be disappointed.
