Gumbo Filé?

Anyone know of a Bay Area source for Gumbo Filé?

  1. several. see this thread for possibilities:

Lhasa Karnak in Berkeley has it (i checked their website) does Dean & Deluca.

    1. Hell, virtually all supermarkets in the Bay Area sell gumbo filé. It's just dried, powdered sassafras leaves—no big deal. And one supplier is as good as any other supplier. The only caveat is that it doesn't keep well. So if a vial/package/small jar of gumbo filé has been sitting on a merchant's shelf for many, many months, it may be past its prime.

      1. Safeway on 16th and Potrero in SF of all places - just bought it there two days ago :)

Thanks for the tips. Safeway @ 4th and King had it. Two rows of it, in fact. This isn't as hard to find as I feared.
