How is it possible that I just discovered this guy?

I need to see your thoughts on this person. I have much to say about him, but want to see comments first.

  1. lol, I like it when they serve like what it seems half a bottle in two glasses for the tastings.

      One better: I love when he pours out half a bottle just to rinse the glasses.

          Watch more shows. We're exaggerating a bit, of course, but sometimes, he uses a lot more to rinse than one would expect, particularly when he has another person on the show tasting with him. It raises an eyebrow, especially with $100+ bottles. A clean glass for each would create less waste. I wouldn't have him change it, though. It kind of de-mystifies wine a bit for me, which is a good thing.

        Gary's good for 98% of wine drinkers as he is honest about value wines on the quality of them.

        The best thing he does is teach people how to taste wine. Check out the next party you are at and see how many people slam and hold their glass by the bowl.

        The 20 minute rablings on 3 wines is a bit much.

          I didn't watch the clip. I never understand what is the big deal against holding the bowl of a stem. I've been seriously into wine for many years and still do it. The glass has to get washed anyway so prints on the stem aren't an issue. I also don't think the temp of the wine is effected unless you're holding the bowl constantly for quite a long time. Then again I'm a righty that likes my wine glass on the left too.
          Gary is knowledgeable and interesting. He's a good resource and they deserve credit for the stuff they put out there, even if it does serve them as well. They're a reputable retailer. He's been hanging around the wine boards for years.
          The biggest knock on him is that he's a maniacal Jets fan. At the draft this year on ESPN he was the guy shown in Jets that went crazy in disappointment when the J's picked Sanchez.

            Personally I find that by the middle of the meal your glass looks disgusting when held by the bowl. It looks unappetizing to me. I purposely use my biggest "bowled" glasses when I have company attempting to force them to use the stem. Although I recall one woman (unable to wrap one hand around the bowl) grasping it using two.

              You aren't alone in the opinion. Like I said, though I drink a lot of wine, I just still don't see how it's important.
              I figure the table ought look nice at set-up, then once a meal has begun it's obviously less important. I also might have some fingerprints on the bowl, but don't eat with my fingers so don't find pasta sauce dripping from my glass. I also don't really see much of a distinction between the wine glass and the water glass which is obviously handled. Also not that it is much of a difference, but with a tapered wine glass containg a pour the center of gravity is on the lower part of the bowl not down on the stem, so it can be easier to handle. No biggie....I'm the Bluto of the wine dinner.

                One of the basics in wine is that tastes and ideas about it vary as widely as the population. There are people who will pay thousands of dollars for a piece of equipment that will keep their leftover wine fresh and at proper temp for weeks and there are those who say "What left over wine?", or jus "Huh???". At any given wine tasting you can usually find people who love a specific wine and others who don't even like it.

                In the same way there are those who could care less about the 'little things' (little to THEM) and others who care a big deal about it. For me the fingerprint issue has never really been the thing about holding the wineglass by the stem. But, as my palate has evolved (no idea where it is on any kind of scale, other than that it's much more sensitive than it used to be) I find that temperature has a lot of influence of the wine I'm drinking. Holding the glass by the bowl definitely warms the wine, but whether an individual can tell the difference or cares about it is something completely different. As they say.......... Your Mileage May Vary.

      2. Personally, I am a big NON-fan. I think his palate is OK. Not great, not good, either. But passable, generally. But the way he approaches wine and talks about it is SO off-putting to me.

        1. He is an acquired taste that some never acquire... But if he can help all those people who are on the edge of wine, and scared by all the snotty - snobby airs that 'wine connoisseurs' try to impose; well all the power to him.
          As the newbs get farther in and become comfortable they will find their own way, and thank Gary for introducing them to wine.

            "Gary V is (like it or not) representative of a new generation in the wine and marketing worlds. The way he promotes his family's wine business is pure 21st century near-genius. Traditionalists and more conservative audiences will find him hard to take and will argue that his methods are crass, that he has compromised interests and is no better than your next door neighbor at reviewing wines. But I think that's the point.

            He's a cross between Wayne's World and Jim Cramer (CNBC's extra-loud finance guy). His marketing methods are aimed squarely at a younger, hipper audience and he knows how to reach them and beyond them. The guy's been on Conan O'Brian, Ellen Degeneris, Nightline and other TV shows. He organized the making of a wine at a custom winemaking facility in San Francisco so his followers could personally participate in the creation and making of a proprietary wine (then buy it, of course). Now he's hawking a wine-focused cruise. He's on every blog, RSS feed, podcast and social networking site he can get on.

            Take notes folks. What he's doing is going to make for the content of a Harvard Biz School course in New Century Marketing."
