  1. Bar Breton, on 5th Av., b/t 28th & 29th Sts., is an excellent place for a first date. Delicious food, moderate prices, attractive decor, and conversation-friendly.

    1. a very good Spanish restaurant on West 23rd St. Between 7th and 8th Avenues souon the south side of the street called El Quehote ( I know I mispelled the name) Very good food there - every time I visit N.Y C. I always have a meal or two there. and its only a block from where my sister lives. She also visits there on a regular basis. I believe it is nearer to 8th ave than 7th. It is very conversation friendly and they make very decent drinks too.

If that place is too pricey for your budget - try the diner on the corner of 23rd and Ninth ave, on the south west corner - they also make drinks there too.

      1. How about Suenos on 17th Street for Mexican? Had very odd service there the last time I was there but the food is good and it's not too loud.

If you're not going at peak dinner time, i would recommend Txikito on 9th avenue. Small and very 'neighborhoody' and the best Spanish food I've had outside of San Sebastian. Also, nice place to eat at the bar so if your date gets awkward, you can chat with the bartenders. : )

I second Suenos. Very romantic. Especially the view of that garden from the glass window. Not sure if all those onions and garlic is first-date friendly...just bring lots of breath mints!

Third on Suenos but note that they are closed on Mondays. I also love Pasita on Eighth Ave just below 14th Street. Great pizzas and wines by the glass. Very sweet little spot for a date.

        2. the food is good not mind blowing but i think the atmosphere is spot on for a first date at il bastardo.

          1. Try Co. - you can read more than you'd even want to about it on CH and, while I personally disagree with Alan Richman ranking this place in the top 10 in the country, it's a cute place to go on a date and share a pizza. Although, prob best if you're going on the earlier side as it gets very crowded.
