Trader Joe's Frozen Macaroni & Cheese - Removed to be "Reformulated"?

I went shopping at the Trader Joe's in Westwood, NJ yesterday. I asked one of the clerks where the frozen macaroni and cheese was. He said they pulled the boxes and that it's being "reformulated"! HUH?!? I told the clerk it was the best frozen macaroni & cheese ever. He said he agreed, and didn't know what was going on.

Is this true? This would kill me. I love TJ's frozen macaroni and cheese. I bought the mac & cheese in the refrigerated case once and it was AWFUL - no cheese flavor and the pasta was very doughy.

I love Trader Joe's, but it seems like every time I find a product I love, they either discontinue it (sun dried tomato pesto, gummi fruits, and the best refrigerated bruschetta ever) or change the item and make it vastly inferior (the frozen carrot cake). What is going on here?

  1. Wow, I saw it at our TJ in Michigan a few days ago. I'll check again next time I go in.

    1. With all due respect, I tried the TJ's mac and cheese once and I thought it tasted pretty much like Stouffers at about double the price. You might try Stouffers and if you find it lacking, add in some good grated cheese and a dollop of sour cream before serving.

      1. I've heard raves about this product. It's incredibly salty. It doesn't even taste like mac 'n cheese. More like mac 'n salt. With orange-ish, yellow food coloring. It's good, in a nasty over the top way.

          Wow...surprised to see those last two negative reviews...maybe you two got the "new, reformulated" version already. I'm completely with the OP--it was one of my fave TJ's products. The version *I* had couldn't taste any LESS like Stouffer's, and I didn't think it oversalty. In fact, I'd usually add a little pepper just to spice it a bit.

          Anyway, if it's true that it's being reformulated, I'm incredibly sad. That leaves exactly NO good frozen mac 'n' cheese, anywhere.

            I have to agree- I love the flavor and bought it consistantly until I started making my own on a regular basis.

              I agree, I love TJ's and hate stouffer's, tried it again recently just to check and yep, still gross. I am NOT happy about this "reformulating!"

          2. I've tried Stouffer's at some point in the past, and by and large microwaveable mac 'n cheese is a no-no. Everyone's tastes are different, but to me, the TJ mac n cheese microwavable has an odd sour note that really ruins things. I've tried it at least four times now, whenever I get a bad salt craving, but it doesn't go down that well.

            Try their mac n cheese in a box (you know, with the powdered cheese). It's super cheap and smooth as velvet.

              I agree about microwaving the macaroni and cheese - YEEK! I like my mac & cheese dry. When I buy a frozen mac & cheese, I always cook it in the oven - TO DEATH. I cook it a half hour until it's somewhat brown, stir it, and cook it another half hour. Most frozen macaroni and cheeses become "good" to me when cooked this way, but TJ's was consistently great.
