My husband and I have been holidaying in the Boston/Newburyport area for the last 3 years. We have a 2 year old and have never been able to have a meal without the little one due to lack of available babysitters. However my parents have joined us for a week and we are keen to avail of their help to enjoy a much needed night out - we love, stress LOVE food- good food that is, and would love to know some great places to eat in the North Shore/Boston Metro area.
We normally have a taster type menu when we go out for a special evening but we are not keen on pretentious places.
I know I am a bit vague but we are really just wanting to sample the best of Boston whether it be pasta or paella or potatoes

A few off the top of my head that offer tasting menus but are not precious are Oleana, Ten Tables, and Craigie on Main, all in Cambridge.

In terms of North Shore, I don't know of any tasting menus, but I can recommend some top-notch places. At the top of my list is Sixty2onWharf in Salem, which is chef owned and consistently wonderful. You might also like the Grapevine in Salem, high-end Italian with a lovely patio for summer nights. I haven't been, but Duckworth's Bistro in Gloucester gets high marks on many food sites, and many of our readers recommend it. We also hear very good things about the Franklin in Gloucester. If you're looking for a nearby place for drinks and like margaritas, I highly recommend the ones at Agave in Newburyport. A review of Agave and Sixty2 are available on my blog.
