I asked this question back in 2007: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/381168

...but I don't know if much has changed at all.

Is there anywhere in LA that does drip coffee by hand with a basic paper filter? It's one of the nice things about Blue Bottle, Philz and other places in the Bay Area - a really simple but effective preparation of drip coffee that didn't involve it sitting around in a carafe for hours OR the fussiness of either a siphon or Clover system.

Thanks!

Groundworks stopped using the Clover over a year ago, coinciding with Starbucks acquisition of the Clover. They do basic drip.

The last time I was in a Groundworks, they still had all their drip in carafes. Maybe that's changed though - I didn't even know they used Clovers (I only saw them at Intelligensia and LA Mill). I've never seen anyone at Intelligensia get a hand-drip but maybe I'll go tot he one in Venice and see what's up.

Thanks.

I try all of the Greater L.A. coffee purveyors mentioned on CH and have yet to find anyplace that prepares their coffee to order, one cup at a time using a paper filter. It's how I usually make it at home with Blue Bottle coffee (a new one is arriving in my mailbox today!) but when I'm out and about in this city it's syphon, Clover, Eva Solo etc. Good luck in your search!

This is what I'm saying! It's really really surprising to me that no cafe has thought to do this. The actual time it takes isn't that much longer than the standard grind-tap-pull espresso system and it surely makes a far superior (and less fussy) cup of drip than having gallons sitting in a carafe or using a Chemex/Clover.

Is this just some Bay Area thing or what? Seriously, I think an LA cafe would do very well to introduce some low-tech.

Btw, looks like NYC is ahead of us on this one: http://nymag.com/restaurants/reviews/underground/41269/

Agree on all points. Despite some 'new wave' coffee places opening in the last couple of years that have already been mentioned above, none of them have picked up on the simple yet wonderful method you (and I) enjoy.
Gotta go cause my bag of Blue Bottle 100% YEMEN(SAN'ANI) arrived an hour ago, waters hot, filter is rinsed...........

Interesting, I thought that they only make espresso and related drinks. Will check out soon! I usually buy a ristretto for immediate enjoyment and get a 'breve' cappuccino for the road and both have always been great!

Just went there this morning (after grabbing a pretty decent bagel from Bagel Nosh on Wilshire). They do indeed make single cup drip coffee by hand, which includes grinding the beans per order (as it should be!) That said, their house blend was nothing to write home about. Maybe next time, I'll try their single origin beans instead.
