Driving from Boston to Rockport, ME. Need roadside food recommendations.

This Thursday I am taking a 5-hour flight to Boston and have to immediately get in my rental car and make a 3.3 hour drive up US-1 to Rockport to make an event I have to be at by 5:30 p.m. While this drive won't really be leisurely we'd still love to stop somewhere relatively quickly once we get into Maine but can survive on snacks if there is somewhere better to wait a little longer for. Where should we not miss?

Other Texas friends making the same commute are going to tough it out and wait to eat at some lobster joint in Wiscasset. I doubt we can wait that long. We want something regional, preferably a favorite to locals. And something not inconvenient to our route North. And, obviously, the service can't take forever.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. Something in Portland? We stopped there recently en route North and had a great meal at "Street and Company" (fish/seafood)

    1. Im a big fan of the sea basket in wiscasset. I dont make a trip up us-1 without stopping there. Basically fried (non greasy) maine seafood, good stews/chowders and lobster/crab rolls.

I would second holding out for the Sea Basket. My guess is the Lobster place your friends are aiming for is Red's, a mile or so beyond the Sea Basket. Red's is long lines for a lobster roll. Sea Basket will get you in and out quickly, very high quality fare, and lobster rolls too!

here is our haddock basket and shrimp basket from last week.

I was also going to suggest stopping at the Ogunquit Lobster Pool on the way. It is closer to Boston than waiting to hit the other suggestions. However, the Sea Basket is out of this world and well worth the wait. The Lobster Chowder is excellent, as are the Lobster Rolls.

Another vote for the Sea Basket! It's right on the way on Rt. 1 and satisfies a lot of different New England seafood shack cravings.

        3. If you want to stop a bit earlier consider Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery. Service is pretty quick and the food is fresh and good. It's right on Rt-1 at the end of the Kittery outley stores. If your guests have a little time Bob's is right next door to the Kittery Trading Post which can be fun for a short walk-thru.
Good Luck and enjoy mid-coast Maine, it is one of my favorite parts of the country!

Sorry, but I have to disagree about Bob's. They've really gone downhill over the past couple of years. Very greasy...smaller portions. Just not worth it. Plus you have to fight the Outlet Crowds.

Another possibility that I hadn't mentioned, though, is Fisherman's Catch in Wells, ME, which is about 20 minutes north of Kittery. Really good, and about 7 minutes drive from I-95 (which I assume you'll be taking to ~Brunswick, ME). It's not on Rt. 1, but just off so MUCH less "touristy". About an hour and change from Boston Logan. Great ambience on a marsh. Clean, tasty and a good value.

Thanks, hargau, for digging that post up...I recalled that there was some recent discussion on the subject, but was WAY too lazy today to look for it.......
