Greatest Restaurant in San Francisco

I apologize for barging in like a newbie, but I call Los Angeles home and San Francisco is always a great.

I'm coming to SF next week and want a great fine dining experience.

I've been to a lot of the better restaurants up there - Aqua (excellent), Manresa (terrific), French Laundry (also terrific) Michael Mina (which felt more like 1.5 stars) everyplace but Coi (which I will try to get into but in case I don't...

Is there anyplace new and fabulous? Anyplace you feel is underrated?

Thanks!

Commis is a new place in Oakland run by the former Chef de Cuisine of Manresa, James Syhabout. Good sophisticated food but in a casual setting.

The one you seem to have missed is the The Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton.

La Folie and Chez Panisse also turn up on many high-end lists.

Yes, indeed. The two best meals I had while in Northern California recently were at both La Folie and Chez Panisse. Wonderful service as well-unfussy, unpretentious, but extremely professional.

A couple of places you should look into:

          Ame
          Spruce
          Perbacco

I haven't been but you might want to consider Gary Danko if you haven't been yet...

Perbacco's good but I wouldn't rank it among the top five local Italian places. Top ten, maybe.

I do like Perbacco but, if I wanted a high end Italian restaurant, I'd choose Acquerello.

Acquerello's the only Italian place I've been that offers a tasting menu and has relatively fancy, formal service a la Manresa et al.

I guess Quince is in the same vein.
