Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the New England

Amazing meal at Anneke Jans (Kittery)

My dh and I had a great meal at Anneke Jans last night. We're staying at OOB so considered lots of places including Portland but decided on AJ after reading good stuff and looking at the menu. Had an 8pm reservation and were seated promptly. Room was about 3/4 full.

Started with the best sidecar I've ever had (including the beauty at Gargoyles in Somerville) and a "raspberry lime rickey" along with some fried olives. I had the mussels (tho' w/o the blue cheese for dh's sake) which were great and dh had the crab cake, also delicious. He had the grilled lobster and I had halibut with lobster and peas for our main. Here's the thing about the food we had...each individual piece of the dish is delicious and special in its own right but it's magic when you put more than one taste on the fork. That's the kind of thing that doesn't happen every day. Had a half bottle of white burgundy that suited us both. Finished with the chocolate caramel tart that was terrific.

Dinner was ~$160 (2 cocktails, 2 apps, 2 mains, 1 half bottle, 1 dessert, 1 coffee). Service was gracious without being over the top. We will be back.

    1. We have to try this place next time we're in the 'hood. Thanks for the reminder!

        1. One of my favorite restaurants. The fried olives are addictive, and eating at the bar, with the windows open, and sipping a martini is heaven.
