wayside market, southold (long island)
not like the heaviest find or anything, but this deli/mini market has some exceptional things. the chicken salad was abso delish, fresh as advertised. the store also has excellent oil, vinegar, dried pasta and finally! properly crushed canned tomatoes from italy.
we certainly could use such a store on the south fork.

re: howler
H: I have not tried it. As far as I know, they are the only place on the NF that makes it, but as you say, that is no guarantee of quality. They also get some good bread trucked in from a Brooklyn bakery a few days a week. My info is from last summer, though. I will try to get more info and report back.

re: howler
No, but my husband is on vacation next week and we will be out there, so I will take a look for sure. Right now for Italian I go to Glen Cove, Massapequa or Willis Ave (when I'm in the area on business) or to Arthur Ave in the Bronx, which is an all day thing. It would be great to have a good supply on the East End. Does Tutto Il Giorno on the water in Sag Harbor still sell boutique Italian supplies? Although I'm sure they're ridiculously overpriced.

re: howler
The Citarella one has nothing of interest to me. Haven't been back since they opened. I went in to check out the prosciutto and they couldn't even get that right.
The restaurant in Sag Harbor when they opened I thought they were going to sell things, but maybe it was more kitchenware than food. I was never excited enough to check it out though. The restaurant got such bad reviews.
