wayside market, southold (long island)

not like the heaviest find or anything, but this deli/mini market has some exceptional things. the chicken salad was abso delish, fresh as advertised. the store also has excellent oil, vinegar, dried pasta and finally! properly crushed canned tomatoes from italy.

we certainly could use such a store on the south fork.

Wayside also has exceptional steaks and will cut them to the thickness you desire. We always do a very thick t-bone like an Italian bistecca from there, and it is fabulous!

They (Wayside) also sell fresh mozzarella on the weekends.

how good is it? tutto italiano also sells freshly made mozarella - you can watch the master make it right there in the store - and frankly its pretty tasteless. here's hoping the wayside market is considerably better.

H: I have not tried it. As far as I know, they are the only place on the NF that makes it, but as you say, that is no guarantee of quality. They also get some good bread trucked in from a Brooklyn bakery a few days a week. My info is from last summer, though. I will try to get more info and report back.

i respectfully disagree. if you get reasonably fatty cuts ground - brisket seems to be the latest favouite - and then shape patties with a hellmans mayonnaise/illy coffe cap, you'll get outstanding burgers.

Have you tried Bay Burger, he makes his own chopped meat with brisket, and bakes his own buns too. Sounds like a lot of work for a burger joint, but I hear they're great. Gotta get there one of these days.

haven't been out for a burger because my big green egg makes them perfectly: 3.5 minutes either side at 500. you should stop by some day and try mine!

I might just do that! Big Green Eggs are awesome.

I did try it a long while ago and it was good, but I still can't deny my favorite burger is from Magic's Pub in Westhampton. The guy from there went and did them at JT's place in hampton bays. they were good too years back. don't know if they still are.

I know, Tutto Italiano just doesn't cut it.

No, but my husband is on vacation next week and we will be out there, so I will take a look for sure. Right now for Italian I go to Glen Cove, Massapequa or Willis Ave (when I'm in the area on business) or to Arthur Ave in the Bronx, which is an all day thing. It would be great to have a good supply on the East End. Does Tutto Il Giorno on the water in Sag Harbor still sell boutique Italian supplies? Although I'm sure they're ridiculously overpriced.

did you mean the citarella spin-off tutto italiano in east hampton or tutto il giorno in sag harbor?!

The Citarella one has nothing of interest to me. Haven't been back since they opened. I went in to check out the prosciutto and they couldn't even get that right.

The restaurant in Sag Harbor when they opened I thought they were going to sell things, but maybe it was more kitchenware than food. I was never excited enough to check it out though. The restaurant got such bad reviews.

i find the pork products here to be relatively tasteless. and for some reason, i can't seem to score imported salami either. maybe some in the city will mail them to me.

its only a few things, but well chosen. you should try the lunch counter (it closes at 2.00); if the chicken salad is any indication it should be excellent.
