Is it me or this site is slow?

The board is really slow.

My downloading speed seems fine with other sites.

  1. Pretty sure it's this site. I'm giving up for now.

    1. it's the site. since yesterday, trouble posting & loading pages, connections keep timing out. i figured it was temporary, and related to whatever engineering was doing to the site to modify the Places & new Restaurant functions...but it's gotten progressively worse over the past 8 or so hours.

I thought it was just me...boy is it frustrating!

      2. It's been intermittently slow for me today.

        1. fyi. What's up??? I am to access other sites easily, chowhound is either so slow I give up, or I can't connect at all....

          1. At this moment in time it's connecting so fast that there is no lag time at all.

The frustrating thing is the connection problem ebbs and flows for no apparent reason (although I get this feeling that the Engineering Tech's are back there behind the curtain somehow causing this to happen as they fiddle with the site while hounds burn).

            2. I also have been having problems, especially with the timing out connection error. And it hasn't sped up for me . . . yet!

              1. Sssssssssssssslooooooow. ???? WWWWWWWWWwwwhhhhhhhhhhhaaat slooooooooooooooow? Seeeeeeeeeeeemssss norrrrrrrmaaaal to meeeee.

                1. Ten days later and it is still slow. The lag is incredible often times my replies and post time out and I get the chow error page.

Any word on when this lag will end?

Are you on a PC or a Mac? If you're on a PC when was the last time you cleaned out your browser cache?

                    1. re: Servorg

No. I've cleaned cache it is not that. Since they are setting up testing for Places I am chalking up the slowness, tons of error pages to that and hoping it is temporary.

                      1. re: rworange

I wonder if Sandwich_Sister has done so? Have you tried CCleaner? I find it really helps to run this and, best of all, it's free. Also at times after running CCleaner (or just clearing your browser cache the old fashioned way) it can help to shut down and restart.

The site is slow. period. It has been recently ... at least since the beginning of August when this was first reported.

I hope Sandwich_Sister and others give everything a try, but it is slow ... and getting lots and lots and lots of error messages. There are times when opening every other post results in an error message. This happens more in the evening hours ... but then again I read the site more in the evening.

That being said, it is not soul-sucking slow like it was sometimes in the past ... just slower than usual and it is not consistant. There are periods of time that are better than others.

                          1. re: rworange

That sounds awful... I haven't encountered any of these problems. I hope that whatever the issue is gets resolved, but I have seen very few error messages on my end recently.

                            1. re: Chris VR

Ironically, I got the Chow application error attempting to open this message ... and two previous topics in a row. It comes and goes though.

                              1. re: rworange

Very weird. The site is loading within a couple of seconds for me, and I'm not getting any error messages to speak of. That's one of the reasons I asked about cleaning up your system to see if that helped. Maybe something to do with your ISP provider?

ADD: Just as a test I clicked on the "The US and the UK: Divided by a Common (Culinary) Language" thread, which is 489 posts or so ( http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/615004 ) and it completely loaded in 35 seconds. Threads of 40 or 50 posts are literally loading in 2 seconds.

                                1. re: Servorg

Well, aren't you a lucky duck? The US & UK thread took more than a minute, maybe even two, to load for me. I am on a Mac and deleted all my past history (I use firefox), and emptied my cache. I have shut down the browser, shut down the computer, rebooted, restarted, and it is still very slow. The only website I find slower is the Food Network. I know it isn't my ISP provider. And I also keep getting the Chow application error. Ever since they made some changes - can't remember which ones they were there have been so many - I have had trouble. It gets frustrating.

                                  1. re: danhole

Mac and Firefox here too. I'm not experiencing anything even close to what you are. What a drag!

                                    1. re: Pat Hammond

Hmmm ... judging by the people not having problems, perhaps you folks have some different permissions.

Yeah, not ISP related as this is the only site where this happens. Like danhole mentioned, it is loading time. This doesn't bother me too much because the way I use this site is to open a window and come back to it. It is not like when there was a 10 minute lag.

One thing that changed for the positive is that there is no longer a lag when editing a reply. Before you could reply and edit once. Then the choice was to either wait for a while to edit again or cut and paste to work around the lag.

Again, I'm not too hot and bothered about it as I figure things will change when the new places changes go through. Still, the problem has been there for a few weeks now.

                                        rworange,

Are you on a Mac? I'm going to run the repair permissions program to see if that helps. And it has been a few weeks.

                                        1. re: danhole

                                          No. PC

                                    2. re: danhole

A month later, it's still slow, though not terminally so. And foodnetwork is by far the slowest site in the english language world, which is so annoying that I have nearly stopped using it.

                              2. re: rworange

heheh yes, I have cleared cashe and tried everything. It's also the fact that it is Only this site. and continues to be only this site. I think this is a server issue and not a user issue.

                                1. re: Sandwich_Sister

Problem is, it's not affecting all users- I'm not having the problems you describe. I'd guess it's browser/OS related, not server related. That doesn't make it suck any less, of course!

                                  1. re: Chris VR

Getting Chow error after Chow error has nothing to do with the browser or operating system.

I was suspecting browser originally since Chow testing seems alergic to IE. However, other browsers are having problems. I don't know why some of us are blessed with this but it has nothing to do with anyone's computer. I am waiting patiently to see what happens after the revised places is installed.

                                    1. re: rworange

If some users are encountering problem after problem, and some others aren't, then the problem isn't purely server-side. More likely it's like the bulk of the other problems on this site, where some piece of code doesn't play nice with some browser/OS.

                                      1. re: rworange

Got 5 application error pages in last 20 mins.

                        2. ditto, slow and sometimes get "page unavailable message"
Seems like a problem for around 2 weeks now.

                          1. I'm posting a few days later than the last poster and I, too, have been experiencing difficulty with this site for several days. Most of today was very frustrating.
It is only now that the site seems to be working better.

                            1. Slow page loading and a few error messages over the last few days. Firefox via Windows XP on a cable connection usually @12 Mbps.
