5th Ave in the 40s in Brooklyn is basically wall to wall Mexican bakeries. You could try a dozen in 15 minutes of walking and find your own favorite! But I'm partial to Lopez Bakery on 5th Ave. and 18th St. (Brooklyn). They make a variety of pan dulce (different shapes on different days). Excellent (though almost unbearably rich) flan, terrific tamales, and a selection of very good (European type) breads, which they supply to many restaurants.

No. Quite recently (last couple of weeks) there was an article in the Times about one in Queens that is ostensibly the first to make tortillas with fresh masa that's been processed in exactly the right way. The real deal is not widely available.

yes, it's true about the tortilleria in queens, which comes highly recommend by the CH community: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/585545 as for panaderias, i like the Panaderia Coatzingo, which is on Roosevelt Ave in queens between 76th and 77th. they have a good selection, fresh and made in-house.

great- thanks so much. I will have to give it a try. Fortunately, my mom is visiting tomorrow so i will have some home made tortillas - i'll head up to queens this weekend.
