Help with Beach Cities Birthday Dinner

f
Foodie 4 Life Aug 2, 2009 11:41 PM

I'm looking for a place to take my mom for her birthday in one of the beach areas (Santa Monica, Marina del Rey, Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan, etc.). She'd really like Northern Italian or Mexican, but would also consider American/contemporary/seafood. Water views would be a plus but not a requirement...the food is most important, as we can always grab a drink overlooking the water before dinner. We'd like to spend no more than $50 for the two of us, without alcohol and before tax/tip (i.e. looking for a place with entrees in the $15-20 range or less)...we typically share one appetizer, two entrees, and maybe a dessert.

Any great restaurants come to mind for places that fit these criteria? All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

      Cafe del Rey, MDR

Not sure of price range, since I haven't been but have heard good things about Cafe Pierre in Manhattan Beach.

I Cugini, Santa Monica has wonderful Italian seafood.

cafe del rey costs much more than $50 for two people.
Foodie 4 Life requested entrees in the $15-$20 range.
the entrees at cafe del rey are mostly in the $30 range.
        add a non-alcoholic drink to that or a starter.. . . .

Really, their entrees start at $30? That surprises me, sounds more like the Ritz at those prices...

mostly high 20's to low 30's.
only one item, the lamb burger, is in the low 20's

Low 20s for a lamb burger, wow. What a rip! Better off just going to happy hour there, then dinner somewhere else.

if you are up for small plates, Mediterraneo in Hermosa Beach is Mediteranian tapas, they also hjave entress. They have a great online menu. You could take a walk on the strand afterwards.

I just had a post card from the Chart House about their new 3 course special for $29.95. They have locations in Redondo Beach, Marina Del Rey and right on the ocean in Malibu at Topanga Cyn and PCH. So that would put you over your budget by $10, but it's a pretty good deal when you contrast it to what you would pay ala carte.

I saw a sign outside their lot that says they do lunch now?! Do you know if it's everyday or just certain days?

Bottle Inn, Hermosa Beach. Sit on the patio for an ocean view, good Italian. Darren's in Manhattan Beach is also fantastic, but stick to the bar menu for your price point.

I don't think there is a good Northern Italian place in the Beach Cities with entrees less than $20.

Ortega 120 in Redondo is a great Mexican place: http://www.ortega120.com/
