Best Bagels in Metro Detroit?

My usual bagel stop is New York Bagel on 12th and Evergreen. It's closest to home. Is it worth making the drive to Elaine's in Berkley? Are there other good bagels in the area I'm missing?

  1. If you like the big, bready type of bagel, Zingerman's in Ann Arbor are very good.

AThere are some places in the area that get Zingermen's bagels (and breads) delivered on a daily basis.
To me, Zingermens are by far the best bagels in MI, but I have not tried the recommended New York Bagel.
We have bagel day every Friday at work, where we alternate the person that brings them in. So once every 6-8 weeks, I bring in Zingermen's - the other weeks I suffer through Panera and Einsteins - note, bagels are not supposed to be soft, nor should they collapse when put in a bagel slicer.

*Soft* bagels? On the *outside*? That's...just absolutely disgusting. What about the crunchy, crusty outside? Blasphemy!

And you can bet on the fact that when I go to NYB, I *always* ask for the most well done raisin bagel they have...and I'm more than willing to point it out myself, even if that means they have to dig through the pile. They're very accomodating. Best ones, however, are the crusty well done ones that have literally *just* come out of the oven. It's amazing how good they can be.

    2. Smarter still is the New York Bagel in Ferndale on Woodward Ave. between 9 and 10 Mile. It's the home base, where all of the bagels for the different NYB stores are actually made. Stop in early in the day and get your bagels fresh and piping totally worth it. Even if you can't get them fresh out of the oven, it's still freshest when had there.

So the bagels I get in Southfield were baked in Ferndale?

        1. re: ragman929

To my knowledge, that's correct. I've watched them load the van with bagels for the other locations back when I was up in the wee hours of the morning.

        2. re: boagman

I second this. The bagels from the Woodward location are the best.

Elaines bagels are too bready for me...sadly, I live two blocks from Elaines and I wish I liked them!

          1. re: coney with everything

ditto everything coney with everything says, including the two blocks (although I do grab one from time to time on the way to work -- plain or egg with strawberry cream cheese. but I don't really consider that a bagel bagel. Sweet treat.)

        3. New York Bagel in Ferndale-hands down . Einsteins and such , gross , thats not a bagel . The bagels from NYB are better than many I have had in New York itself . A Mini ham on a salted with lettuce tomato and mustard- perfection . When the bagel is still warm from the oven and the ham and toppings are cold from the fridge, oh man , I shudder with delight just thinking about it . I now know where I am stopping on my way to the Royal Oak farmers market tomorrow morning . Now Zingermans , feh . I can take it or leave it .

The quality of Zingermans baked goods over the last few years has fallen off significantly with the exception of the magic brownies.
I picked up a braided Challah there recently that tasted like run of the mill grocery store bread.

            1. re: Fritter

I completely and utterly disagree regarding any systematic change in Zingerman's baked goods over time.

I have been buying the baked goods very consistently every 3 months or so for the last 4 years (to supply to a workplace Friday "treat day" when it is my turn) and have noticed no change in quality at all. (And I don't buy them too often inbetween those times, so I have a nice snapshot type sampling of quality over time---it's not that I have them all the time and have gotten inured to any possible changes) And I have eaten there off and on since about 1990 so I think I would have noticed.....

I hardly think that Zingerman's is perfect and about many things I believe they are overrated but baked goods are one thing that they have *always* knocked out of the park.

I had Challah there just last week (as part of a #27) and it was awesome. Not even remotely like grocery store bread whatsoever.

          2. NYB in ferndale is excellent. i live in NY/NJ and i rush there to get their chick salad on pumpernickel or their tuna salad on sesame everytime im back in town. i actually freeze their bagels and bring them back to NJ with me.

When I worked on Main St. in Royal Oak, we always drew straws to see who would go and pick up the bagels in the morning. It was always NYB in Ferndale, unless they were out of the salt bagels, which was what everyone pretty much wanted. Then Hollywood Market would have to do.
