kcl060 Jul 31, 2009 07:27 PM

Hi! Does anyone know if there's an Indian or Pakistani grocer in the Miami area, especially near Coral Gables. Im moving from VA and We have them all over, so I want to know if I should buy everything I need from here before I move.

Just found another place on the net as I was responding to this thread. Looks promising, although in Broward Co (Sunrise).

    Apna Bazaar
    8330 W Oakland Park Boulevard
    Sunrise, FL 33351-7308
    Phone: (866) 648-5145

For those in the North Miami area, there is a tiny South Asian market on NE 166th St. (I don't know the address, but it is almost directly behind King Palace Barbecue restaurant -- their parking lots are connected.) The selection was so meager that I didn't see anything there I wanted to buy or that would take me back to the shop; but I suppose if you live in the area and ran out of something, you might find something that you could use.

Is that the one with the goats in the freezer, Dexter-style?

There's one on Miami Gardens Drive near 77th avenue that is pretty decent as well.

Ha! Dexter-style is right! I tried this place, it was okay, the guy tried to be helpful and the eggplants he had in the fridge section were great, but the selection was limited.
But those freezers!!! I was afraid to open one, but my friend checked them all out and we were hysterical!

Imlee Restaurant in strip shopping center in Pinecrest on US-1 at SW 128 street used to have a market also. Don't know if they still, but you might want to check it out.

In West Kendall, I go to the store on 84th St near 137th Avenue. There are also lots of related things in the south, like the Asia Market near US 1 and Colonial Drive/SW 160th St. near Sango, Marie's Patties, and Caribbean Roti.

Just came across another place today, but it's not close to Coral Gables. It's further north, in south Broward County:
International Spices 1801 NW 66th Ave, Hollywood, FL

Pretty decent supply (for the Miami area, anyway) - spices, rices, flours, ghee, some fresh vegetables, plenty of spices mixes in a box, as well as the ubiquitous Patak's sauces.

I've been to a few South Asian grocers in Miami (haven't been to Asia Grocery yet though). Unfortunately, the ones I've been to focus more on spice mixes in a box (kind of the South Asian version of Kraft mac & cheese in a box), rather than fresh vegetables and other traditional staples.

Along those mostly prepackaged lines, there is a small Indian grocer at the shopping mall on the southeast corner of W Flagler and SW 107th Ave, and a Pakistani grocer and butcher in the shopping mall around the corner from the Pakistani restaurant Lazeez near 13919 SW 66th St

Also, I stumbled across this listing of South Asian grocers a month or two ago. I would be sure to call before trekking out to any of them because I'm not sure how up to date the list is

I haven't been there in ages, but there's an Indian restaurant in the Gables - House of India - near corner of Miracle Mile and Douglas Rd. that I recall having an attached market. This is not a recommendation of the restaurant, which is mediocre at best.

There are a couple other Indian restaurants in the Gables - Indian Palate, Mint Leaf - and they might be able to steer you to a good market.

I think both places are closed. (Asia Grocery on Miller and the one in the Gables: didn't survive the building boom a few years back)

Asia Grocery is right down the street and thriving more than ever. They now serve some small and very tasty dishes.

I would recommend Asia Grocery on 56 Street and SW 68th Avenue
