Funny, I've been assembling a google map of restos, cafes, and pubs in the general viscinity of McGill (where my DD will soon be going). It is a pretty random collection, but the general idea is student budget friendly with pescatarian options, near the Plateau/McGill or transit accessible. Check it out. Comments welcome.

lola rosa on milton is good and vegetarian, so is thompson house (on campus) and there is a cafeteria (yes, i said cafeteria) that serves 4-6 asian dishes every day on mctavish and sherbrook (desautels building) that is really good. Also, for budget friendly, you cannot beat tayyeb in the basement of the Shatner building (SSMU).

Akli in the basement of Scotiabank is open at 11am everday till they run out (which is usually in about 3 hours) don't go there past 12:30-1:00 as they will be out of almost everything. You can imagine how fresh everything is since they are only open for a few hours a day and they always sell out.

I'd skip the place in the Desautels building - it's bland, overpriced generic asian food.
There are a few threads here about places near McGill and downtown. Also, it seems your map has left off the places around Concordia (a short walk from McGill, far better eating options, and Myriade for coffee...)

Thanks so much for the feedback. I've been trollng this board for a while now, listening for relevant tips. In my short time here there haven't been a lot of McGill / Concordia threads. Time to search, eh?
