Cocktails in Santa Monica or Venice

Hi Chowhounds! I'm trying to find a fun, low-key place by the water to have some good cocktails tomorrow night with some friends. We'll be meeting up on the earlier side (around 6 p.m., if that helps). I'm picturing a beach shack that serves fun, colorful, beachy drinks (yes, we are all girls--but edgy girls :) ). Would love something with a little local flavor.

An example: I love Flake in Venice; if that served up drinks... especially by the water... it would be perfect.

Drive up the coast a little bit and try out Duke's barefoot bar.

World Cafe
Chaya Venice

All the above have happy hour from about 5-7, too. Of these, the "beach shack" vibe would be Fish Company or World Cafe or Makai

Is Makai still open? Last I looked, it looked dead, as in closed. That block (ocean to 2nd) sure has a hard time keeping stores open.

And does the Yard serve girlie, I mean, colorful, beachy drinks? My impression was that it was more british-pubbish.

there are a ton of places, but none of them very beachy or "shack like"
all pretty "trendy." pinotxo is casual, fun, and pretty good (tapas and
spanish wine)
oh right-
chez jay and
the galley
are about the most "old beach" places left - both steak
houses, with bars of course, interestingly

chez jay ocean just south of the pier
the galley main, and hollister i think (north of ocean park blvd)

almost all these places now have happy hours, but less so on
sat. chaya venice is an excellent happy hour all evening sunday
and for that matter a good choice for you for tomorrow, not funky
but very hip
