The skinny on Barnacle Billy's?

Hi All

I did a board search for Barnacle Billy's in Perkins Cove Maine and I didnt come up with much, so I was wondering-is it worth it? Is their Lobster Roll their star? What's the inside track?

Thanks in advance everyone!

  1. Sysco tourist food. One of the tiniest lobster rolls you can find any where. If your looking for some thing in the Cove walk another block or so to MC Perkins Cove or go up to the Ogunquit Lobster Pound.

      I wondered that...

Thanks for the info- MC looks fantastic-and Ive only heard wonderful things about it- it just seems pretty formal-but maybe thats our best bet- thank you!

Every thing on the cove is pretty casual. I wouldn't worry much about it.

    2. My wife and i love BB. Looking for a shack experience go to the shack side; looking for waitress service go to the restaurant side. I have never tried the rolls but the lobsters are just great and very reasonable for absolute freshness. They are the stars at BB.

      1. NOT sysco tourist food. Billy's is great- sit on the deck outside. Great steamers and lobsters. (how does sysco relate to tht food??). Chowder is delicious. Barbeque chicken is ok. Lobster rolls are finebut not their best. Also have a great rum punch.
MC is great - not formal- don;t worry about it-shorts ok, bathing suits not.

"how does sysco relate to tht food"

You mean other than the fact that just about every thing comes pre-done out of a Sysco box? All of their scallops, shrimp and fish etc I have seen is straight out of a box.
While the lobster and steamers may be the exception their lobster roll has to be the puniest lobster roll in the entire state.
          Great for a tourist......maybe.
          Lousy for a CH.
Since there are numerous other options right in the area that are lite years ahead it's a rather moot point.

So, where do you recommend going for the best lobster roll right in the area?

            1. re: EIF1lady

              McPerkins Cove
The Ogunquit Lobster Pound (not in walking distance for many but a short drive)
              The Oarweed

Thanks all! We ended up having a delicious lunch at MC Perkins Cove- and enjoyed an amazing view to boot. An amazing smoked salmon appetizer to start, and I had their mussels as a main- as I wasnt actually in the mood for the lobster roll at that point and most of their seafood lunch entrees were fried. DC had their cod tacos and loved them.

Since you are speaking of scallops, shrimp, fish you must be talking about Billy's etc. I assumed the OP wanted info about the original Billy's- where you can sit out on the deck. They make their own chowder, lobster stew, clams, lobsters. They will tell you that there is a place that makes their barbeque chicken( not Sysco) and the name of the person who bakes their pies is on the menu. There is also a delicious garlic bread on the menu as well as sweet corn in season.I doubt there is a single sysco anything at Billly's. The lobster roll is in the ordinary sized hot dog roll- no smaller or larger. And they have the best rum punch anywhere. All that said, the OP made a great choice to go to MC- I did not recommend that since they were specifically asking about Billy's.

          2. Loved the clam chowder and the rum punch. The rum punch was very strong!

Locals and regulars are always at Barnacle Billys, It has a lot of heart. I will always go there.

Glad you enjoyed it. oh ya, the rum punch really packs a punch. Someone told me they make the rum punch in huge trash barrell like containers because they sell so much of it.

                1. Lynda, so right, you should have complained up the chain and up to the department of health if you were not satisified. Had a similar experience at a waffle house I USED to love. Last two bites, found a huge fly under my waffle. Owner/manager suggested it had been planted. I was nauseaus and stood to talk to him away from the table. He open palmed me and backed off, saying that my meal would be comped. The 4 of us ate there every weekend. I did not pay for my meal but never ate there again. I did report it to the department of health, placed closed a month later. Your experience should give pause to anyone considering a visit.

Not by a long shot IMO.
