Las Friday I was working in our North Las Vegas office, and had to pick up my son at the airport about an hour after I got off work. I was faced with numerous dilemnas...not the least of which was the thought of negotiating the 15 at rush hour. And I wanted to eat something, but not too much...after all, son was flying in from Amsterdam and could be hungry (or, as it turns out, could just want to go home and crash....).

So I decided to help solve the dilemna by taking surface streets, and finding a place where I could have a light meal...I was thinking of course that I would pass numerous taquerias on the drive. I did of course, but none appealed. But as I was cruising Maryland Parkway near Twain a sign caught my eye: "Louisiana Fried Chicken."

Well, who could resist? I pulled into what looked like an abandoned strip mall, and headed to the only store there that appeared occupied. This was Mac Ribz. (3333 S. Maryland Parkway; apparently they also have a store on East Owens, wherever that is...). It appeared to be largely a take-out joint, but there were a few tables.

As I was deciding what to order, and explaining to the counter guy that I was looking to eat light, he pointed out the days special: A "sampler" for five bucks. It included one rib, one piece of fried chicken, one piece of catfish, and fries..along with a small soft drink. How could I go wrong for five bucks? I sweet-talked him into substituting greens for the fries, and that proved to be an excellent move....

The rib, despite being in the restaurant's name, was probably the least interesting of the items. It came smothered in sauce (I didn't think to ask for sauce on the side...)..the sauce was tangy but a little too vinegary. And the rib was just ok; a little tough.

Ah, but the catfish and the chicken...clearly the fry cook here knows what he is doing. I had to wait a few minutes for my plate, because I was told they were frying the catfish ... but despite obviously being right out of the fryer there wasn't a hint of grease or oil...just a crunchy and deliciously spicy cornmeal breading. Best piece of catfish I've had in years. The chicken was also very tasty.

The place emptied out while I ate...so I chatted a bit with the counter guys. They were all very friendly, if perhaps a little surprised to see this white girl coming in straight from work. I was definitely over-dressed and perhaps a little out of place. But the food was worth it. They asked me how I liked it, and I gave them the thumbs up. "Tell your friends" they told me as I was leaving. So I'm telling you. Check it out.

Prices are dirt cheap, as you already guessed from the sampler. I think I want to go back and try the gumbo......

i drive by there every day - i guess they finally opened - there was an "opening soon" sign plastered on the side wall for quite awhile. The strip mall actually had an italian restaurant on the corner ( name escapes me - old, old school place ) that burned down - they built it back up but without the italian place.

Gumbo ?!?! i'm there ! Catfish to compete with catfish alley - i'm there again !
