Aquavit during RW - Great

My friend and I like to go out for our mutual birthdays every year and take advantage of the sometimes risky restaurant week offerings. For some reason we both simultaneously wanted to go to Aquavit, a place neither of us had been in many years.

The restaurant was fairly empty yesterday and the space is very pretty with light wood and clean lines, as a Swedish place should be. The waiter was very nice and did not give any attitude when we said we were ordering off the rw menu.

She ordered the house Pinto Blanc which she enjoyed and I had a glass of pinot noir rose, perfect for the humid day.

We both chose the fresh rye bread which was so good we each asked for another. For appetizers she had the chilled corn soup served over beets with slices of salmon. Although she was not sure what to do with the salmon, which was very good, the soup was great, tasted like corn in a bowl. (I have noticed that on menus a lot this year). I had the herring plate. Three types of pickled herring with a boiled potato, very good.

We both had the grilled salmon as mains, it may have been the best cooked salmon I have every had. It was a generous portion with crispy fatty skin and almost raw rich meat inside. It was served over grilled fennel with asparagus.

For dessert she had the goats milk dessert with mango and raspberry which was light and creamy and not as sour as I thought it would be. i had the also surprisingly light chocolate moose on a crispy peanut layer with raspberry ice cream. (I think that was what the desserts were, I am not sure if I remember exactly right.) They were both excellent.

All and all it was one of my best restaurant week experiences.
