A REALLY good salad- Westchester????

I been dying for a really tasty, fresh salad and can't quite find the "right place" with the "right stuff" in the area. I don't just mean some stuff thrown on top of greens with some dressing, and don't necessarily mean the kind at Cosi either. Any other ideas, Chowhounders?

Here's an update. The Iron Tomato in White Plains now has a create your own salad. Very fresh ingredients, tons of stuff to pick from and $6.99/pound.

You have to try Cheeburger that recently opened in White Plains...wow amazing amazing salads although you wouldn't think so at a burger place. They have a ton of toppings for their salads at no extra cost!! It is one price per salad with unlimited toppings with nice fresh mixed greens. This was very exciting for me as I have been trying to find a great salad in westchester for a long long time....and a decent price!

Sounds great. Iron Tomato has a nice create your own salad bar - but they do charge by the weight.

I have to say that the excitement generated by a first time poster about a chain restaurant salad is a little disappointing to me (maybe especially because I am in mourning about learning of the demise of a fabulous independent eatery, Touch of Jamaica, on CH)...

I agree with Marge that a salad bar that allows public handling is fraught with possibilities that can make one shudder-- dropped items being put back, sneezing, coughing, and sullying one product with the ones next to it. Aaargh.

If you like this type of salad, a new place is opening up in Rye Brook, Chopt, that lets you point and choose but you CANNOT touch!

A place that I find that makes wonderful, fresh, and unique salads is Via Vanti in Mt Kisco. About 100 notches above salad bar places!

Iron Tomato is point and choose. I did not get that Cheeseburger Cheeseburger was a "salad bar" where you do it yourself though, nor did I get that from the menu. But there are a lot of places like that around - many of the "deli's" in White Plains have a hot food bar and/or salad bar. They are kind of unappetizing!

Cheeburger salads are not handled by the public, they are all made to order from your table with waiter service...not sure where people got the idea of this being a help yourself salad bar???

I do realize that, but we were wondering why someone originally thought Cheeseburger fit that mold (pardon the use of the word!!!)

The bing cherry salad at The Cookery in Dobbs ferry. Also the endive salad at trattotia Vivolo in Harrison. All fantastic. The pea shoot salad at the cookery is allso good but the shoots can be hot or miss depending on how mature...

Lefteris Gyro in Tarrytown does an excellent Greek Salad. Even better is to top it with their marinated chicken breast and some anchovies!

I second the oriental chicken salad. Also, for make your own, Armonk Kitchen (I think is the name) and William Nicholas in Katonah. Stay away from Mix it Up in White Plains if you want fresh. Everythng tastes old.

I've heard that the salads at M.A.D. in Pelham are really good. Also, if you're close to the Bronx, River City Grill in Riverdale has great salads. You pick the kind of lettiuce you want, the kind of toppings (there are a ton, all kinds of meats, fruits, vegetables and cheeses), and then you pick your dressing. Everything is chopped and tossed together. You can also order it as a wrap. It's basically a burger place/sports bar but the salads make it worth the trip.

Salads at M.A.D Cafe in Pelham are HANDS DOWN the best in Westchester. Very large, great toppings, and great dressings. You will find plenty of other good food here as well. Mix it up does a pretty good job at salads too, depending on what you get. I've also just starting to enjoy Melt's salads, which not as good as their excellent sandwiches, are still pretty damn good.

I enjoy the salads at M.A.D. too. I often get them for take-out, with the dressing on the side. Nice big container, that travels well. Good Cesar dressing, too.
