Interesting that it is assumed that by "clam chowder", cookkevin is referring to the New England version, rather than the Manhattan version. Given the midwest area's penchant for cream soups, this isn't terribly surprising. As a transplanted New Jersyian, I've always had to differentiate between the two.
Perhaps this would require a different thread, but is there anywhere in MSP one can get a decent bowl of Manhattan clam chowder? (I'm not a fan of the NE version).›2 Replies-

I would say that in my (admittedly western/midwestern) experience new england is BY FAR the more common of the chowders. and at least according to wikipedia (i know i know) this could be due to the fact that it appears that manhattan clam chowder was a modification of a previously popular dish, and one that didnt take hold until the early 20th century.
