Hartford area donuts and treats
Hi! CT native now living in San Francisco. I'll be back in the area next week with my 7 year old and am looking for the best place for "treats." We'll be staying in Simsbury but will have a car.
Also, I looked at the links above for fairs and it looks like it is a slow time. Any suggestions for a fried dough fix?

Hello Native-
Treats huh? Well, in Canton there's a place called Joe Pizza and I believe they have fried dough on the menu though I've never had it. Their sister restaurant, Joey Garlics (in another town) has it.
For baked goods in the Simsbury area I'd suggest going to Harvest Bakery and Cafe on Route 10--Hopmeadow Street (the main drag). They have great breakfasts/lunches (think banana bread french toast) and they have stuff to go like lemon bars, etc.
Not sure if this is your thing but in West Hartford I've got 2 recommendations. For an old school bakery/donut joint try Elmwood Bakery on New Britain Avenue. For churros and other good stuff that's less American, try Aby's bakery on Farmington Avenue.
There's also a neat one-of-a-kind place in Hartford (just a few miles over the West Hartford line) called Tastease. Their specialty is mini cake donuts in various flavors with cool icings etc. It's located on New Park Avenue near the intersection of Sisson Avenue.Oh, I just thought of one more joint. Over the MA border in Southwick there's a joint called Mrs. Murphy's donuts. They're legendary in my workplace (which is sort of between Simsbury and Southwick).
have a spectacular trip and if you go anywhere cool or revisit things you miss on the East Coast, food-wise---do leave a follow up post. I'm always curious to hear what natives want when they come back to CT. My father lives in HI and he always gets some whole belly fried clams when he comes back to CT.

re: ratbuddy
Hi...it's been a while since I've been there as they open later than I need to be at work M-F (which I've always found odd for a donut place). I hope they're not closed but the last time I was there (picking up "birthday donuts" they decorated for me in June 2008) the nice couple who owns the joint indicated that they were potentially getting ready to sell.
dang.

re: ratbuddy
Tastease is closed, but relocating to West Hartford. I visited the shop a few days before they closed (on June 30) and the owner said they were aiming to reopen in late August. I forget the new address. I *think* she told me it used to be an Indian restaurant, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

re: ratbuddy
You're the best for posting this so quickly!
When it was said that they were moving to WH center my first thought was "they'll die with the rent every month". It would've been cool to see them move to WH (my town) but I'm happy that they're just still around...maybe the new owners will open earlier so I can bring their lovely d'nuts to work sometime. -
