Weekend in LA, carless
My sweetie and I are spending a much needed weekend in LA this weekend. We'll be staying at the Standard on Sunset, and are hoping to go carless. We love cool, hip, and happening spots when we're in LA (we're big foodies and lushes from SF), and appreciate the scene (although not the lame, too-coo-for-school kind).
So far, it's looking like we'll be able to cab or hoof it to our favorite spots - AOC, Bar Marmont (across the street), Lucques, and Osteria Mozza. Any other recommendations for cool bars and restaurants for us to go to?
Mid-range prices (upto $24 ish for entrees), great drinks, great atmosphere. We're looking for places we can lounge during the day and in the evenings. Happy hour scenes where we can watch local culture a big plus. We don't like the WeHo scene as demonstrated on Santa Monica, and find the Skybar tiresome, only because it's such a pain to get in. Big fan of places like the Newsroom Cafe. Old school LA, like Musso and Franks, are favorites too.
In SF, we're big fans of bars like Elixir and Alembic, and restaurants like Incanto and Dopo.
Recommendations much appreciated. And if you have any insights on cool cultural happenings this weekend, please do share!
Queer-friendly a plus.

Love those beer-battered fish tacos at the Standard.
Little Next Door on Third
The Griffin in AtwaterOn the daytime/casual side:
Cafe Vienna on La Brea & Second
Milk on BeverlyIf you can make it a little further afield in the city, you must visit Hiko Sushi for exceptional sashimi. Fair warning--it's not a hot spot and is in a very very casual place with very strict rules. But so worth your time if you make it there.
And the cemetery screening this Saturday is Some Like It Hot!

Mirabelle has happy hour 7 days, 4pm to 7pm, not sure how happenin' it is on weekends but the half-priced appetizers are good.

Not too much of a cab ride from your hotel my number one recommendation would be Animal on Fairfax Blvd. just a bit south of Melrose. Go to the place link and scroll down to see the reviews here. Just one caveat. The Google map that goes with the place link has the restaurant marker in the wrong place (there seems to be some confusion about Fairfax N or S) and it's really just barely south of Rosewood (which is between Melrose and Beverly) and it's on the west side of Fairfax.
Basically across the street is Golden State which is less expensive with some interesting food and even serves a "beer float" that has gotten a lot of play on this board. We have not been.
