One night in SF (near Union Sq). Solo recommendation?
I'm going to be in the Bay area in a couple of weeks but only in San Francisco for a day/evening. I'll be staying near Union Square. I'd like to be able to get in a nice dinner. I will be solo.
I've been to SF in the past and have been to Boulevard, Piperade and Ame. I'd like to try something new along those lines. I've done a little research but am having a hard time. All I can say is that I'm not really interested in Slanted Door.
Anyone have any suggestions? I don't mind taking a cab but I don't want to go too far either.
Much appreciated!

Canteen's in that area and good for solo diners.

If "near" to you includes Boulevard, check out La Mar. You can dine solo at a two top or sit at the bar and chat with the staff. Do not miss the ceviche. Frankly, I've been unimpressed by about half the entrees I've tried but consistently delighted with their ceviches, appetizer/small plates, and cocktails (including pisco sours).
I second Robert's suggestion for Canteen if you want to stay closer to Union Square.
Fish and Farm has also been getting some good press for a slightly re-vamped menu. I went for happy hour last week, so I didn't try the dinner, but the food looked good and the calabrese sausage I had was great.
Ambiance-wise, the only one of the three that comes close to matching Piperade, Ame, and Boulevard would be La Mar. Canteen and Fish and Farm look much more like small neighborhood restaurants, though the food they serve is a cut above a lot of neighborhood spots.

I second Canteen for a great dinner . If you are looking for something more casual, I have enjoyed the bar food in the Grand Cafe at the Hotel Monaco (Geary & Taylor).
