Northwestern Evanston campus visit...feed us!

My son and I are in the process of visiting colleges this summer, and we are enjoying the search for lunch in each location.

We have about an hour and a half in the mid-afternoon before we need to return to the airport.

Any good pizza places within walking distance of the campus? We are also open to any other types of food ideas as well.

Thanks!

Al's deli on noyes street has excellent sandwiches served on baguettes and daily soup specials. The big homemade cookies are very popular also.

One of my favorite little known Evanston restaurants. So little known in fact that it has been out of business for quite some time.

There is no lack of good lunch suggestions walking distance from the NU Evanston campus. Here are some of them.
Lulus Dim Sum and Then Some (Pan Asian)
        Davis Street Fish Market
        Tommy Nevin's Irish Pub
        Dave's Italian Kitchen
        Carmen's Pizza
Lou Malnati's (Chicago Deep Dish Pizza)
        Las Palmas (Mexican)
        Noyes St. Cafe
        Potbelly Sandwiches

        And that's just the start.

That is an excellent list - I would include Ruby of Siam and Thai Sookdee for Thai food and Joy Yee's for another Pan Asian choice - but if you are in search of Pizza there is also Giordano's but I would go with Lou Malnati's - do not get me worng I like Giordano;s and Carmen's but Lou's i sclassice Chicago deep dish -

I lived in Evanston for roughly five years. Maybe it is just a matter of personal taste but I found the food at a number of these places listed to be sub-par or, at best, mediocre.

In particular, I would consider the food to be sub-par at Nevins, Las Palmas, and Carmen's. One of the worst food experiences of my life was at Nevin's. Las Palmas is by a seeming consensus seen as a joke for food but a good place to drink margaritas. Carmen's is almost certainly the least well-regarded pizza place in Evanston.

The rest of the places listed are fine (although i'm not sure I would list a Potbelly's chain as a must visit).

I would second Al's as a top choice. Union Pizzeria is quite good (my favorite current place in town - it has artisinal pizzas, a bunch of great small plate appetizers, and good alternate entrees). Gigio's has the best pizza by the slice in town. I like the food at Bar Louie and Prarie Moon as well for casual dining.

For a really good meal, I have had a number of very good experiences at The Stained Glass.

I agree with you to some small degree about Carmen's (it is way better IMHO than Giordanos). Given the circumstances, I stand by Las Palmas and Nevins. But The Stained Glass?

With a teenager? Who wants pizza? For lunch? Is it even open for lunch?

In my experience The Stained Glass is the most overpriced, overrated restaurant in town. Tried it. Figured I had a bad experience. Tried it again. Wrote it off my list. Permanently.

              But to each his/her own.
