Pasta Shop, Berkeley - grilled cheese panini
The cheese counter at the Pasta Shop in Berkeley is now offering a sandwich, a grilled cheese panini. I assume they started this pretty recently.
It's Montgomery cheddar with green onions on levain bread, flattened in a panini press, for $5. It doesn't sound like much, but it's one of the better sandwiches I've had anywhere lately. The cheese has just the right sharpness, with the onions adding flavor and texture. It's the right size, not huge but just big enough to be filling.
I had to report it here, it was that good of a find.

After I figured out you needed to order it at the cheese counter, rather than the prepared food space, I picked one up.
It wasnt bad, but frankly it "wasnt much" volumetrically speaking. I thought it was more of a $5 snack than a lunch sandwich.
Bread good, cheese good, 5min to eat and 5min later you are hungry again.
Since they are clearly set up to make reasonably complicated dishes, and stock
lots of ham/salami etc it would have been nice if they had a $8 version which was
larger, with meat etc.The Pasta Shop does have a number of other prepared/semi-prepared foods I like.
